Knights Travel To Springfield To Take On Wilkes In First Round Of ECAC Tournament

Newburgh, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team will continue the 2018 season on Saturday when it travels to Springfield, Mass. to open play in the ECAC Tournament. The third seeded Knights and second seeded Wilkes University are scheduled to kick-off at 2 p.m. following the matchup of first seeded Springfield College and fourth seeded John Jay. Live stats and video will be available for those unable to attend.

At a Glance: Mount Saint Mary enters the opening round of the tournament at 13-5-2 after drawing with #21 Farmingdale State, 0-0, and dropping a heartbreaker in penalty kicks in the Skyline Conference Championship Final on November 3. Sophomore Cassidy Rykowski (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) finished the contest with three saves.

Junior Theresa Stinson (Troy, N.Y.) and senior Maeve O'Sullivan (Garden City Park, N.Y.) lead the team in goals with seven apiece. Stinson, O'Sullivan and sophomore Gina Rivera (Washingtonville, N.Y.) are tied for the points lead with 16.

Senior Claire Newman (Cromwell, C.T.), junior Chrissy Cannella (Cornwall, N.Y.), who received first-team all-conference honors on Monday, and sophomore Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.), who also received first team all-conference honors, round out the six players with 10 points each.

Freshman Julia DeSantis (Islip, N.Y.), the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week on October 15 and a second team all-conference honoree, has scored four times for the Mount. Senior Emma Costa received second-team honors for anchoring the back line for the Knights and scoring a career high two goals and totaling five points.

In goal, Rykowski has posted a .737 save percentage, 0.99 goals against average and has made 42 saves. She is third in the Skyline Conference in shutouts with five and second in goals against average.

Scouting the Colonels: Wilkes enters Saturday's game at 9-7-2 overall on the season and is coming off a tight 2-1 loss to #9 Misericordia in the MAC Freedom Conference tournament final. The Colonels were outshot 15-8 in the game, including 5-4 in shots on goal. Samantha Cecere finished the game with three stops for Wilkes and Jessica Egan scored the lone goal on a penalty kick.

Nicolette Towlen leads the Colonels with seven goals on the season and is the leader in points as well with 17. Egan is second in goals with six and points with 13. Haley Evans is the assist leader with four.

Cecere has played in 14 of the 18 games for Wilkes, playing 1,188:54 of a possible 1,660:00 in goal, recording three shutouts on the season. She holds a .769 save percentage and a 1.14 goals against average, making 67 saves.

ECAC Tournament History: The Knights return to the ECAC tournament for the first time since 2015, when they defeated Stockton, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals. They were then defeated by NYU in a hard fought 2-0 loss.

The Mount has advanced to the ECAC semifinals four times since 2011.

What's At Stake: The winner of this matchup will face off against the winner of the Springfield and John Jay matchup on Sunday for an opportunity to advance to the semifinals. Kick-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Springfield.
