Men’s Soccer Wins Second Straight Skyline Conference Crown

Wyant nets two in victory

Newburgh, N.Y. – Freshman Matthew Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) scored twice and sophomore Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) made three saves in goal as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team claimed its second straight Skyline Conference Championship with a 2-0 win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon.

In a tightly contested first half that featured six combined shots, the Knights broke through with just under 10 seconds left before the intermission with the eventual deciding goal. Wyant started a free kick on the left wing that found the back of the net at the 44:52 mark of the contest to give the Mount the 1-0 halftime advantage.

Shots in the opening period were even at 3-3 with Rapp making a strong save on a free-kick off the foot of Michael Mischler in the 34th minute to keep the game scoreless. Merchant Marine rounded out the first half with four of the six corner kicks awarded.

The Knights maintained the one goal lead until the 59th minute when Wyant struck with his second of the game to put the Knights in front by two goals. He played a loose ball in the box into the back of the net at the 58:48 mark to close out the scoring in the game.

Rapp made a second big save to keep the Mount in front early in the second half when he denied David Kelly in the opening minute of the second half. The Mariners finished the second half with a 5-1 edge in shots, but could not break through.

After scoring the game winning goal in each of the Mount's two games in the 2018 Skyline Conference Championship Wyant was named the event's Most Outstanding Player. He scored three goals in the two games and moved into the team lead in markers with nine and in points with 26.

Rapp finished off the win with three stops and recorded his fifth shutout of the season. He picked up his ninth win of the year and lowered his goals against average to 1.25 and raised his save percentage to .721. Matthew Milner finished with one stop in the loss for the Mariners.

USMMA outshot the Mount 8-4 on the day, while shots on goal in the contest were even at 3-3. Wyant finished with half of the team's shots with Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) and Bobby Caronia (Ossining, N.Y.) registering the other attempts. The Mariners dominated corner kicks on the day 7-2.

With the win, Mount Saint Mary posts a new single season record for wins and moves to 14-5-1 on the season. The Knights will learn their opponent in the NCAA Tournament on Monday at 1:00 p.m.
