Rochester, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team saw its 2018 season come to an end on Saturday following a 2-0 loss at #9/10 Rochester in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Knights finish the season with 14 victories, a single season program record.
Mount Saint Mary held Rochester off the board in the opening 45 minutes, despite being outshot in the period 7-1. The Yellow Jackets had a goal disallowed on an offside and
Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) made a strong save, one of three in the half, to keep the Yellow Jackets off the board.
Rochester controlled shots in the first half, outshooting the Mount 7-1 and dominating corner kicks 5-0.
Matthew Fuge (Avon, Conn.) recorded the lone shot of the half for the Knights.
The Yellow Jackets broke through early in the second half with the eventual game winning goal. Aiden Miller scored his fifth of the season when Nik Angyal broke him through on a breakaway at 48:05 for the 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second stanza.
Rochester added an insurance tally in the 81
st minute when Ryan Aspenleiter buried a feed from Patrice Douge at 80:43 to close out the scoring in the game.
Rapp finished the day with four stops in the game, adding a save in the second to his trio in the first. Patrick Conway earned the shutout for Rochester with a single stop on the night.
Rochester finished the night with a 12-2 advantage in overall shots and a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks also went to the Yellow Jackets, 6-0. Fuge and
Joseph Mesoraca (Oceanside, N.Y.), who narrowly missed a goal late in regulation, recorded the shots for the Knights.
Mount Saint Mary finishes the season with a 14-6-1 overall record.
