Women's Basketball Collects Non-Conference Victory Over Staten Island

Desrats nets career-high 13 points

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team snapped a two game losing streak on Tuesday night, defeating the College of Staten Island 57-40. Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) and Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) combined for 27 points to lead the Knights in scoring.

The Dolphins outscored the Knights 11-8 in the first quarter to take an early lead. The Knights then dominated the second quarter, holding Staten Island scoreless for a six-minute stretch and finished the quarter outscoring the Dolphins 20-5. Smith had eight points at the half while Annie Keenan (Nesconset, N.Y.) ripped down 10 rebounds.

The third period was back and forth with the Dolphins finishing with a slim 16-15 lead in points but the Knights lead 43-32 heading into the fourth stanza. The Knights closed out the fourth quarter strong, holding Staten Island to 20-percent from the field. They outscored the Dolphins 14-8 in the quarter to clinch the 57-40 victory.

Smith finished with 14 points to go with three assists and four rebounds while Desrats had career-high 13 points, one assist and one steal. Keenan finished with two points, a career-best 14 rebounds, two assists, and game-high five steals. Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) added seven points, seven rebounds and three assists on the night.

Megan McEwan lead the Dolphins with 10 points, two assists, seven rebounds and four steals. Rosa Perone chipped in eight points, three rebounds and Diana Todaro added seven points, four rebounds and two steals.

The Knights outshot the Dolphins 38.5-percent to 22.4-percent and shot 30.8-percent from the three-point line compared to Staten Island's 13-percent. The Mount dominated the glass in the contest, out rebounding Staten Island 47-35. The Knights converted 16 points off of 20 Dolphin turnovers and won the fast break points 14-6.

At 2-2 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary finishes their homestand in their Skyline Conference opener against Yeshiva on Thursday at 6 p.m.
