Knights Open Conference Play With Win Over Yeshiva

Smith matches career-high in scoring

Newburgh, N.Y. – Three players finished with double figures as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team pushes its win streak to two after winning its first conference game of the season against Yeshiva 79-55. Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) led the scoring attack with 17 points.

The Knights dominated the first quarter, outscoring Yeshiva 26-11, including an 11-0 run for a two-minute stretch. Five different players scored during the run for the Mount including Elizabeth Limonta (Stewart Manor, N.Y.), who finished with seven points in the quarter.

The second period was much of the same for the Mount, as it finished the quarter with a 48-18 advantage. Smith finished with six points in the quarter and Toriana Tabasco (Hillsdale, N.J.) finished with four.

The third quarter was won by Yeshiva in a high scoring period, 21-18. Limonta again was the leading scorer with six and Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) finished the quarter with five. The final stanza ended in favor of the Maccabees as well, outscoring the Mount 16-13, but the Knights ended the game with a convincing 79-55 victory. Smith finished the final stanza with seven points to finish the night with 17 points, matching her career-high.

Limonta finished the night with 13 points and nine rebounds while Cleare added 11 points, eight rebounds, one steal and one block. Kerri Hauser (Gloversville, N.Y.) and Tabasco each added seven points for the night and Hauser added six rebounds. Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) finished the night with four assists and five boards and Morina Bojka (Prospect, Conn.) chipped in five rebounds.

Michal Alge led the way for the Maccabees as she finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points, hauling in 15 rebounds and handing out six assists. Nicole Bick was the leading scorer with 19 points to go along with three steals.

The Mount's defense held Yeshiva to 26.5-percent from the field and 16.7-percent from the three-point line. The Knights finished the game shooting 41.8-percent from the field. The Mount converted 16 Yeshiva turnovers into 21 points and dominated the paint, scoring 38 points in the lane.

At 3-2 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary goes on the road Saturday afternoon to face-off against conference foe St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
