Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday, as it fell to Misericordia, 65-41, to open a four game home stand.
The Knights were held to 28.6-precent shooting and turned the ball over 23 times as a team.
Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and
Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) led the Knights in scoring with eight points apiece.
The Knights put together a strong first quarter, outscoring the Cougars 14-9. The Mount began the game on a 13-3 run.
The Cougars then went on a big run in the second period, dominating the quarter by a score of 30-11. They shot 10-for-17 as a team in the quarter and outscored the Mount 26-16 in the last two periods to put the game away.
Misericordia's offense was led by Japriya Carroll (18 pts), Rachel Carmody (14 pts) and Tessa Zamolyi (13 pts). Carmody finished with a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Elizabeth Limonta (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) had a game-high 14 rebounds for the Knights, chipping in four points, two blocks and three steals. Smith had a team-high three assists and Cleare had eight rebounds for the Knights.
The Cougars had 23 points off Mount turnovers and scored 13 second chance points on the day. They held the shooting percentage advantage, converting at 34.8-percent on the day and had the advantage in turnovers forced of 23-15.
At 1-1 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary continues its homestand against Vassar on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
