Patchogue, N.Y. – Three different players scored a goal, including freshman
Kayla Davis (Islip Terrace, N.Y.), who finished with the game winner as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team posted its fifth straight victory with a 3-2 road win at St. Joseph's-L.I.
The Knights got the scoring started early on Saturday when
Theresa Stinson (Troy, N.Y.) scored in the 13
th minutes to give the Mount an early 1-0 lead. She picked up a loose ball in the box and deposited her sixth goal of the season at the 12:07 mark of the contest.
The Mount saw its lead double in the 27
th minute when
Chrissy Cannella (Cornwall, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the third time of the season. She sent home a free kick at the 26:10 mark to give the Mount a two goal advantage.
St. Joseph's-L.I. sliced its disadvantage in half in the 31
st minute on a Claire Brady tally, but Davis answered just under four minutes later to push the lead back to two goals. Davis drove home a rebound from a
Haley Murphy (Massapequa, N.Y.) shot at 34:17 to give the Knights a 3-1 halftime advantage.
Mount Saint Mary outshot the Golden Eagles 14-2 in the first half and took two of the three corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
The Mount's two goal advantage stood until the late stages of regulation time when St. Joseph's-L.I. clawed back to within a goal. Christina Gagliardi scored her eighth goal of the season at the 84:51 mark to get the Golden Eagles to within 3-2, but were not able to get off another shot in the game.
Stinson moved into a tie for first on the team in goals with her sixth of the season with Cannella scoring her third of the campaign and first since September 8. Davis picked up her second game winning goal of the year with Murphy moving into a tie for second on the team in assists with two.
Cassidy Rykowski (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) picked up her fifth win of the season on Saturday, finishing the game with a trio of saves. She raised her save percentage to .684 on the year in the win. Juliana Cintron-Leonardo stopped 12 Mount Saint Mary shots in the loss.
Mount Saint Mary finished the game with 22-7 advantage in overall shots and a 15-5 edge in shots on goal. The Mount finished with the 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Saturday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 8-4-1 overall on the season and to 4-0 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights return to action on Wednesday when they play host to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. Kick-off with the Lady Bears is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
