Newburgh, N.Y. – Three different players scored a goal and
Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) made six saves in net as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team advanced to its second straight Skyline Conference Championship Final with a 3-0 win over Old Westbury on Wednesday night. The win matches the highest win total in program history with 13.
Matthew Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) got the scoring started early in the opening period on Wednesday and potted the eventual game winning goal in the 29
th minute. He took a free-kick from the top of the box and rifled his seventh goal of the season inside the left post at 28:29 for the one goal advantage.
The Mount's lead would double in the 32
nd minute when senior
Connor Lynch (Clifton Park, N.Y.) matched Wyant with his seventh marker of the season. He blasted in a free-kick from 30 yards out at 31:55 to send the Mount into the intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Mount Saint Mary finished the opening 45 minutes with an 8-5 advantage in shots over the Panthers, while corner kicks in the opening stanza were even at 1-1.
The only goal of the second period came early when the Knights closed out the scoring in the game in the 52
nd minute. Freshman
Anthony Gugliemo (Setauket, N.Y.) scored for the second straight game when he finished off a freed from
Fred Stark (Hollis, N.Y.) at 51:53 to give the Mount a commanding 3-0 lead.
Wyant and Lynch remained tied for second on the team in goals with seven following Wednesday's tilt, with Wyant pushing his team lead in points to 22 following a scoring output. He netted his second game winning goal of the season and is tied with three other players for the team lead in the category.
Mount Saint Mary finished the night with a slim 13-12 advantage in shots to go along with a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. With three of the four corner kicks in the second half, the visitors finished the night with a 4-2 edge in the category.
Rapp picked up his eighth win of the season and his fourth shutout of the year with his six save performance against the Panthers. His outing improved his save percentage to .707 on the season and lowered his goals against average to 1.34. Mike Warren rounded out the night with six tops for the Panthers in goal.
Wednesday's win moves Mount Saint Mary to 13-5-1 overall on the season heading into Saturday's final against USMMA, who topped Maritime 2-1.
