Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team clinched the top seed in the Skyline Conference Championship on Wednesday by virtue of a hard fought 2-1 win over St. Joseph's-L.I, its fourth straight overall. The Knights claimed their 12
th win of the year and earned a bye into the Semifinal Round of the Championship.
The Knights struck twice in the first half on Wednesday and it proved to be enough. Freshman
Matthew Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) tallied his sixth goal of the season in the 14
th minute off a free-kick from the top of the box and fellow freshman
Anthony Gugliemo added the eventual game winner just over seven minutes later.
Gugliemo, who scored for the first time in his career, picked up a pass from senior
Fred Stark (Hollis, N.Y.) and tucked a shot inside the back post at 20:58 to give the Mount a 2-0 lead and the eventual deciding tally.
In a tightly played first half, the Mount took a 5-4 lead in shots into the intermission, while corner kicks in the opening stanza were even at 1-1.
The lone goal of the second half came in the 59
th minute when Joel Ulloa tallied for the first time in 2018. Alan Ponieman started a free kick from outside the box that Ulloa buried under the bar at 58:17 to close out the scoring in the game.
St. Joseph's managed just two shots in the second half, with one finding the back of the net and the other skittered just wide off the foot of Ray Ruiz early in the second stanza.
Wyant moved into a tie for second on the team in goals with his sixth of the season and took over the team lead in points with 20. Stark collected his fourth helper of the year, good for second on the team, and Gugliemo became the 14
th different Knight to score a goal and the eighth different player with a game winning goal.
Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) earned the win in goal with a pair of first half stops, with Tyler Flaherty suffering the loss for the Golden Eagles with seven stops.
Mount Saint Mary finished the night with an 11-6 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 edge in shots on target. Corner kicks in the contest were even at three per side.
Wednesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 12-5-1 overall on the season and to 8-1-1 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights will play a home game on October 31 with opponent and game time to be announced.
