Women’s Volleyball Sweeps St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn, Purchase

Burke totals 20 kills over two matches

Brooklyn, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team moved its conference winning streak to four matches on Saturday with 3-0 sweeps of both St. Joseph's-Brooklyn and Purchase. Madelyn Barberan (Fishkill, N.Y.) posted 13 kills in a 25-13, 25-23, 25-17 triumph over the Bears with Alex Klesin (Glendale, N.Y.) putting away 15 winners in a 25-15, 25-15, 25-9 victory over the Panthers.

The Knights controlled the first and third sets in Saturday's opener, but needed a 6-1 spurt to close the second frame to take the two set advantage. Barberan and Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.J.) sparked the closing run with two kills apiece.
 
Barberan led all players in the match with 13 kills, hitting .237 in 38 total attempts. She added nine digs to the winning effort over the Bears. Burke rounded out the win with 10 kills and finished off a strong all-around match with two service aces, three digs and five total blocks.
 
Sophomore Klaire Wall (Point Pleasant, N.J.) lifted a match-high 17 digs for the Knights and led the team with three service aces, while Kim Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) handed out 30 assists and was one of four different players with at least two aces. She finished off the win with two blocks and five digs for the Knights.
 
St. Joseph's was paced by nine winners from Cristina Morales who added seven digs in the match. Makayla Beehler handed out 19 assists, while Valentina Urgo led three different players with at least 10 digs with a team-high 15.
 
Mount Saint Mary finished the match with a 38-23 advantage in kills and hit .177 as a team in the match. The Knights dominated aces 10-3 and rounded out the match with a slim 5-3 edge in total team blocks.
 
Mount Saint Mary 3 – Purchase 0
The Knights eased to their third straight win overall and fourth straight against league rivals after hitting .277 as a team against Purchase. The Panthers were limited to just 15 kills in the match and hit -.043 as a team.
 
Klesin matched Purchase's team kill total in the win with 15 of her own, hitting an efficient .343 in the match. Burke added a .412 attack percentage, collecting 10 more kills for the Knights to go along with three aces, two digs and a pair of total blocks.
 
Jenny Picarillo (Troy, N.Y.) lifted a career-high 11 digs against the Panthers with Barberan adding nine more in the win. Gries rounded out the day with 32 assists against Purchase, adding a service ace to the winning effort. Gries was one of seven different players with an ace, with Renee Hydo (Bethpage, N.Y.) joining Burke with a team-high three.
 
Mount Saint Mary posted a 37-15 advantage in kills over Purchase, dominating service aces 14-4 to go along with a 3-1 edge in total team blocks.
 
With two wins on Saturday, Mount Saint Mary pushes its record to 16-12 overall on the season and to 6-2 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a trip to John Jay on Tuesday. The non-conference match with the Bloodhounds is set for 7:00 p.m.
