Knights Drop Straight Set Non-Conference Decision At John Jay

Barberan lifts 10 digs; Klesin records seven kills

New York, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team returned to action on Tuesday night and suffered a 20-25, 17-25, 17-25 non-conference loss at John Jay. Alex Klesin (Glendale, N.Y.) led the offensive attack with seven kills, with Madelyn Barberan (Fishkill, N.Y.) totaling 10 digs.
 
Mount Saint Mary rallied from a 15-10 first set deficit to surge in front 17-10 with seven straight points. Klesin and Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.J.) keyed the spurt with two kills apiece along with a block. John Jay answered with the next six points to pull in front 22-17 and went on to score three of the final four points of the set, finished off by a kill from Nyla Lloyd-Clarke to open a 1-0 lead.
 
The Bloodhounds moved out to a 7-2 lead to start the middle frame on Tuesday and closed the frame with a 6-2 spurt to take the two set advantage. The Knights hit -.062 in the frame, with John Jay holding an 11-7 edge in kills.
 
The third set began as a back-and-forth affair, but saw John Jay open a 13-8 with a four point run. The Bloodhounds closed out the win with a 6-2 run, taking advantage of four Mount Saint Mary miscues. Brianna Geraldo and Niovis Monsanto recorded kills for John Jay over the run.
 
Klesin finished the night with seven winners for the Knights and added a pair of digs and three total blocks. Burke finished off the night with a team-high four blocks for the Knights to go along with six kills, hitting .235 in the process.
 
Emily Mazzurco (Middletown, N.Y.) totaled four winners for the Mount with Alyssa Barbara (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) posting two service aces and seven digs.
 
Barberan was the only Knights to reach double-figures in digs with 10 and closed the night with two kills and two aces. Klaire Wall (Point Pleasant, N.J.) lifted six digs and senior Kim Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) handed out 17 assists.
John Jay was paced by 10 kills from Mballou Berete who rounded out a strong all-around night with three aces and three blocks. Geraldo totaled nine winners and equaled the match-high with 10 digs. Kimberly Rodriguez led all players in the contest with 28 assists.
 
John Jay closed the night with a 33-23 advantage in kills and held a slim 8-6 edge in service aces. Mount Saint Mary held the close advantage in total team blocks at 5-4.
 
Tuesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 16-13 overall. The Knights will close out the regular season on Saturday when they play host to league rivals Sarah Lawrence and St. Joseph's-L.I. Matches at the Kaplan Center will begin at 11:00 a.m.
