Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.J.) matched the program record for blocks in a five set match with 10 and added a career-high 18 kills as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team outlasted Bard on Tuesday night by scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-27, 21-25, 15-11.
The Knights controlled the first two sets, putting away 23 kills in opening a 2-0 lead. The Mount scored the final three points of the opening frame, capped by a Burke kill, and used a 4-0 run to finished off the second frame capped by kills from
Madelyn Barberan (Fishkill, N.Y.) and
Renee Hydo (Bethpage, N.Y.).
After claiming the first two sets, the Mount hit -.022 in the third frame and saw the visitors total three more kills in the fourth. Bard took advantage of an attack error from the Knights and kills from Storm Bookhard to pull to within 2-1 and used a 4-0 run to end the fourth to even the match.
Mount Saint Mary fell behind 11-9 in the fifth, but put together a 6-0 run to close the frame to pick up the win. Hydo keyed the run with a pair of service aces.
Burke finished of a big night with the 18 winners to go along with an efficient .371 attack percentage. Her 10 blocks featured nine assists to go along with a dig.
Alex Klesin (Glendale, N.Y.) continued her strong senior season with 12 winners and finished off a double-double with 10 digs, adding five total blocks.
Barberan lifted a career-high 29 digs, besting her previous best by five, and added eight kills to the winning effort.
Klaire Wall (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and
Alyssa Barbara (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) rounded out a quartet in double-figures in digs with 19 and 10, respectively.
Kim Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) rounded out the night with 42 assists for the Mount and added nine digs and a pair of service aces. Hydo finished off the win with two aces and added nine digs for the Knights.
Bard was led by 13 kills from Maracela Talamantes and received 12 winners from Mikala L'Hote. Jewel Smith handed out 37 assists and Emily Anastasi lifted a match-high 40 digs.
Mount Saint Mary finished the night with a 53-42 advantage in kills and hit .140 for the match. Bard controlled the service game with a 12-5 edge in aces, while the Mount dominated the net with a 12-5 advantage in total team blocks.
Tuesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 14-12 overall on the season. The Knights return to conference play on Saturday when they travel to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn to take on the host Bears and Purchase.
