Men’s Soccer Scores Key Skyline Conference Win At USMMA

Wyant totals four points in victory

Kings Point, N.Y. – Freshman Matthew Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) totaled four points and was one of three different goals scorers as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team posted an important 3-1 Skyline Conference road win at the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Tuesday night.

The Knights opened the scoring late in the first half when Connor Lynch (Clifton Park, N.Y.) tallied in the 42nd minute to give the Knights a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. He finished off a feed from Wyant and Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) at 41:51 for the only scoring play of the opening 45 minutes.

The Mount carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission despite being outshot 9-3 by the Mariners. USMMA also held a slim 2-1 edge in corner kicks over the course of the first half.

The Mount doubled its lead in the 63rd minute when Doyle found the scoring column when he finished off a nifty pass from Wyant at the 62:56 mark of the contest. Wyant found himself in the scoring column just under 13 minutes later when he finished off a penalty kick to give the Knights a commanding 3-0 lead.

The only blemish for the Knights came with just over 13 minutes left in the game when Alex Madonna broke through for the Mariners at the 76:56 mark of the contest.

Lynch and Doyle each scored their team leading sixth goals of the season, with Doyle posting the deciding marker in his second straight game. Wyant moved his team lead in assists to eight on the night and his team lead in points to 18, four more than Doyle in second.

Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) returned to goal of the Mount and finished the night with four saves in his fifth win of the season. Matthew Milner made a single save for the Mariners in the loss.

USMMA finished the night with an 18-6 edge in overall shots, but just a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Mariners finished the night with the 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

Tuesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 10-5-1 overall on the season and to 6-1-1 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a trip to Purchase on Saturday for a noon time kick-off with the Panthers.
