Knights Topped On The Road At #17/6 Rutgers-Newark

Myrtja makes five saves

Newark, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team fell to 1-3 on the road in 2017 on Monday night with a 5-0 loss at #17/6 Rutgers-Newark. Freshman Jakup Myrtja (Newburgh, N.Y.) finished the contest with five saves in goal for the Knights.
 
The Scarlet Raiders carried a 1-0 lead into halftime following an early tally. Fabio De Sousa scored the eventual game winning goal at the 8:20 mark of the contest on a give-and-go play with Chigozie Atubi.
 
Rutgers-Newark finished the opening 45 minutes with a 9-3 edge in shots and a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. Myrtja closed the opening period with three saves for the Mount.
 
The Scarlet Raiders opened the game up with two quick goals just under 15 minutes into the second half and put the game away with two more goals in the final 17 minutes of regulation. Ariel Parada and Alex Torres scored just over two minutes apart to give Rutgers-Newark a 3-0 lead before Zachary Gillespie and Victor Navas, Jr. each scored their first of the season late in regulation time.
 
Mount Saint Mary was outshot 21-13 overall in the game and 11-1 in shots on goal. The Scarlet Raiders also finished with a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Joey Dolan (New Paltz, N.Y.) paced the Mount with five shots, with Jonathan Schefer (Greenlawn, N.Y.), Joe Bachalhau (Woodbridge, N.J.) and Steven Beleno (Newburgh, N.Y.) each recording a pair of attempts.
 
Myrtja finished with five saves in goal for the Mount in 77:40 of work with Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) coming on to make a single stop in just over 12 minutes of action. Andres Medina made Rutgers-Newark's only save in the game in the victory.
 
At 3-5 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary is off until September 27 when it returns to Skyline Conference play against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. Kick-off with the Bears at Kaplan Field is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
