Newburgh, N.Y. – Fred Stark (Hollis, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the season and
Joey Dolan (New Paltz, N.Y.) potted his second game winning goal of the year as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team opened Skyline Conference play on Wednesday night with a 2-1 win over Yeshiva.
The Knights, who controlled much of the first half, scored the only goal of the period when Stark found the back of the net for the first time this season. He headed in a corner kick started by
Steven Beleno (Newburgh, N.Y.), who picked up his first career point on the play, at the 24:06 mark of the contest.
Mount Saint Mary went into halftime with a one goal lead and an 8-1 advantage in shots over the Maccabees. The Mount also took four of the six corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes on Wednesday.
Dolan doubled the Mount's lead in the 64
th minute when he scored his team leading fifth goal of the season.
Joe Bacalhau (Woodbridge, N.J.) started a free kick from the corner that Dolan deposited inside the near post for a two goal lead at the 63:47 mark.
Yeshiva answered just under five minutes later and got to within a goal when Julian Ribak scored his third goal of the season. He picked up a loose ball in the box and tucked a shot inside the far post to bring the visitors to within the final 2-1 mark with just over 20 minutes left in regulation time.
The Knights had a chance to extend the lead back to two goals with 9:55 left to play, but
Jonathan Schefer (Greenlawn, N.Y.) was denied on a big save from Yeshiva keeper Max Goldstein. The Maccabees had a free kick sail wide in the closing seconds to close out the threat.
Dolan moved his team lead in points to 11 with his goal on Wednesday with Stark becoming the sixth different player to score a goal on the season for the Knights. Beleno and Bacalhau each picked up their first points of the season, giving the Mount nine different players with at least one point.
Freshman
Jakup Myrtja (Newburgh, N.Y.) picked up his first career win in goal without having to make a save. Goldstein suffered the loss, but made four stops for Yeshiva.
Overall, Mount Saint Mary held a 13-3 advantage in shots, which included a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. Mount Saint Mary also finished with a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks on the night.
Wednesday's win gets Mount Saint Mary back to the .500 mark overall at 3-3 and moves in to 1-0 against league rivals. The Knights return to action on Friday when they play host to non-conference foe Cobleskill. Kick-off with the Fighting Tigers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
