New Paltz, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team closed out play at the New Paltz Hawks Invitational on Saturday with straight set losses to the host Hawks and Montclair State. The Knights dropped a 14-25, 17-25, 24-26 decision to New Paltz and closed the tournament with a 22-25, 21-25, 14-25 defeat to the Red Hawks.
New Paltz 3 – Mount Saint Mary 0
The Knights opened day two of the event hitting -.010 against the Hawks, committing 22 attack errors and only 21 kills. New Paltz held the edge in the match in kills 34-21, aces 9-7, digs 43-34 and total team blocks 8-4.
Madelyn Barberan (Fishkill, N.Y.) and
Nicole Spinelli (Wantagh, N.Y.) led the offensive attack with five kills each, with Barberan adding an ace, a block and four digs. Spinelli rounded out the contest with two aces and a block for the Knights.
Kim Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) handed out 17 assists in the match and added a pair of digs, while
Julimar Figueroa (Dorado, Puerto Rico) lifted a team-high 19 digs.
Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.Y.) finished off the match with three kills and three total blocks.
New Paltz was led by nine kills from Taylor Cimillo and Maddie Van Pelt with Cimillo adding three aces and four digs. Maddie Zwockl led all players with 26 assists, while Emma Hines posted five blocks. Veronica Matedero equaled the match-high in digs with 19 for the Hawks.
Montclair State 3 – Mount Saint Mary 0
The Knights came back in their final match of the two-day event with 33 kills against the Red Hawks to go along with nine aces and 43 digs.
Barberan paced the Mount with seven kills to go along with 10 digs, while Burke and
Jackie Survilla (West Islip, N.Y.) each posted five winners. Survilla rounded out a strong match with eight digs and three service aces for the Mount.
Gries rounded out the day with 22 helpers against the Red Hawks and added six digs, while Spinelli led the Mount with four service aces to go along with four kills and a block.
Montclair State received a match-high 10 kills and a .400 attack percentage from Schyler White with Ashley Griffith leading all players with 32 assists. Caitlin Lange finished up with five blocks for the Red Hawks and Alexandra Campos led all players with 11 digs.
At 2-7 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary on September 15 against Scranton and Potsdam at the Roadrunner Invitational hosted by Ramapo.
