Union, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team played on the road for the first time since Mach 18 on Saturday and suffered a 15-11 Skyline Conference loss at Kean. Junior
Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) led the offensive attack with eight points and in the process set the program's single season assist record.
Mount Saint Mary scored the first two goals of the game when
Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and
Nicholas Graziano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) tallied inside the first nine minutes of action. After the Cougars potted the next two goals to knot the score at 2-2, Kugler scored his second of the game with 61 seconds left in the opening period to give the Knights a 3-2 advantage after 15 minutes.
After a first quarter that featured five total goals, the two teams split 10 goals in the second with the Knights carrying an 8-7 lead into the intermission. The two teams alternated the first five goals of the frame and neither team scored more than two straight in the stanza. Following a Tom Kelly goal tied the score at 7-7 for the Cougars, De Meo scored with 2:44 left in the half to give the Mount the one goal halftime edge.
Kean outshot the Mount 22-12 in the opening 30 minutes, with the Knights scoring on eight of its nine shots on goal. The Cougars picked up 17 first half groundballs to 11 for the Knights and won 13 of the 16 face-offs contested before halftime.
Trailing by a goal at the half, Kean outscored the Knights 7-0 in the third period and 8-3 after halftime to secure the conference victory. The Cougars scored four times in the final 4:31 of the third stanza and held the Knights off the board after halftime until a
Ryan Maraio (Staten Island, N.Y.) goal with 11:25 left in regulation time.
De Meo continued his standout junior season with three goals and five assists, moving his assist total to 49 and his point total to 78. His assist mark is two better than the record he set in 2016 and his point total is seven shy of matching the single season mark he set in 2016. He closed out a strong game with six groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers.
Tristan Earle (Millrift, Pa.) finished the day with a goal and two assists to go along with two groundballs, with Kugler potting three goals. Maraio continued his steady freshman campaign for the Knights with two goals for the Knights.
Kean was led by four goals and seven points from Matt Brodley with Brian Mills and Cole Blackley each netting three goals. Connor Baucom picked up 12 groundballs and dominated face-offs, going 24-for-28 on the day.
Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) reached double figures in saves for 10
th time this season and the third straight game with 12 stops. Ryan Sieb made one save for Kean and Zack Koehler picked up the win without making a stop.
Kean finished the game with a 46-17 advantage in overall shots and a 27-12 edge in shots on goal. The Cougars posted a 41-15 edge in groundballs and won 25 of the 29 face-offs in the game. The Knights rounded out play 14-for-17 in clearing chances and 3-for-6 with the man advantage.
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 5-7 overall and to 3-3 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is the final home regular season contest of the season on Wednesday against Purchase. Face-off with the Panthers is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
