Knights Roll Past Purchase On Senior Night

Earle leads scoring attack with seven points

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team reached 20 goals in a game for the second time this season on Wednesday in a 23-8 Skyline Conference win against Purchase on Senior Night. Eight Knights finished with at least two points in the game, led by seven from junior Tristan Earle (Millrift, Pa.).
 
The Knights opened the game up early on Wednesday with six first quarter goals. Kenneth Atkins (Wallkill, N.Y.) and Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored inside the first three minutes of action, before Kenneth Gallagher (Northport, N.Y.) scored three times in seven minute stretch to key the opening run.
 
Purchase got on the board late in the first period and opened the scoring in the second stanza, but the Knights scored five of the eight goals in the period to take an 11-4 lead into the break. Seniors Atkins and Sean Jennings (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) found the back of the net as part of a 5-0 second quarter scoring run.
 
After 30 minutes of action, Mount Saint Mary held a 27-10 advantage in shots and a 28-11 edge in groundballs. The Knights dominated face-offs before the intermission 13-4 and were a perfect 8-for-8 in clearing chances.
 
The Knights erupted for eight third quarter goals and went on to outscore the Panthers 12-4 after halftime to secure its fourth league win of the season. Peter Beidl (Clifton Park, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the season in the third with Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) scoring twice and assisting on two other goals in the frame.
 
Mount Saint Mary closed out the win with four more goals in the final period, with Jennings scoring his second of the game and Kugler potting a pair of goals.
 
Earle rounded out the night with a goal and six assists for the Knights with Jennings and Atkins each scoring twice. Kugler scored five times in the win and Nicholas Graziano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) wrapped up the night with three tallies and an assist.
 
De Meo added four assists to his two goals and is within one point of tying his single season point record of 85. Gallagher rounded out a big night with four goals and an assist with Billy Holland (Pearl River, N.Y.) contributing a pair of goals.
 
Beidl finished the night with seven groundballs and three caused turnovers, with Michael Capetola (Egg Harbor Township, N.Y.) and Joseph Timmons (Staten Island, N.Y.) each scooping six. Timmons rounded out the night 18-for-28 in face-offs, while Marco Spagnuolo (Staten Island, N.Y.) won six of the seven draw he took.
 
The Knights used four goalies in the game with senior A.J. Galletta (Commack, N.Y.) playing just over 36 minutes and making four saves. Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made a pair of stops with Eli Laikin (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) making a single stop. Alec Durkin (Mattituck, N.Y.) came on to play the final 6:57 and made five stops for the Knights.
 
Overall, Mount Saint Mary outshot Purchase 52-34, including 34-20 in shots on goal. The Knights won the groundball battle 46-29 and held the edge in face-offs 24-11. The Mount finished the game 17-for-18 in clearing attempts and held Purchase to 1-for-6 in extra man opportunities.
 
Wednesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 6-7 overall on the season and to 4-3 against league rivals. Next up for the Knights is a road contest at the United States Merchant Marine Academy on April 19. Face-off with the Mariners is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
