Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) broke his own single season record with an 11 point performance on Wednesday, but the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team was upended by the United States Merchant Marine Academy by a score of 21-14.
After the two teams traded the first two tallies of the game, the Mariners scored five straight goals to open a 6-1 lead with just under six minutes left in the opening period. The Knights responded with three of the next four goals, with De Meo scoring and assisting on a
Nicholas Graziano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) marker, to move to within 8-4 after 15 minutes of action.
The Knights would not be able to get closer than four goals in the second period and after falling behind 12-5, scored three straight times, including two goals and a helper from De Meo, to pull back to within 12-8. A Nick Roros goals in the final two minutes of the second period moved the Mariners in front 13-8 heading into the intermission.
USMMA outshot Mount Saint Mary 38-13 in the first half, including 21-9 in the first period, and dominated face-offs by winning all 22 contested before halftime. The Mariners also controlled the groundball game in the opening 30 minutes, 32-8.
Mount Saint Mary outscored USMMA 3-2 in the third stanza, with De Meo,
Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and
Tristan Earle (Millrift, Pa.) tallying to keep the Knights within four goals at 15-11 heading into the fourth quarter.
USMMA opened the fourth period with four straight goals to open a 19-11 advantage and would not allow the Knights closer than seven goals the rest of the night. Kugler scored twice in the final quarter, including once with the man advantage, with De Meo recording a pair of assists.
De Meo cruised past his pervious single season record of 85 points with 11 points on Wednesday. He scored five times and assisted on six goals to match the second highest single game point total in program history and finishes the night with 95 points on the season. He closed the night with five groundballs and a caused turnover.
Earle and Kugler each scored three times for the Knights with
Billy Holland (Pearl River, N.Y.) producing a goal and an assist.
Marco Spagnuolo (Staten Island, N.Y.) won the Mount's only two face-offs in the game.
USMMA was led by five goals from Pat Coll and got five assists and eight points from Nick Treon. Chris Whiteneck went 34-for-34 in face-offs for the Mariners and scooped a game-high 26 groundballs.
Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) matched De Meo with a team-high five groundballs and finished the game with 14 saves for the Knights. Dave Ossing made three saves in the win, with Zac Tilley coming on to make eight saves in 30 minutes of work.
USMMA rounded out the night with a 59-31 edge in shots and a 51-21 advantage in groundballs. The Mariners won 34 of the 36 face-offs contested with the Knights going 24-for-27 in clears and 1-for-2 with the extra man.
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 6-8 overall on the season and to 4-4 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights close out the regular season on Saturday night when they travel to Stockton. Face-off with the Ospreys is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
