Men’s Lacrosse Earns Key Skyline Conference Win Over Maritime

Kugler scores five times, Beidl secures six groundballs

Newburgh, N.Y. – In its quest for the program's first ever berth into the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament, the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team scored an important 17-10 home win over Maritime on Wednesday night. Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored five times and Joseph Timmons (Staten Island, N.Y.) won 13 face-offs to lead the Knights.
 
After falling behind 2-1 in the early going on Wednesday, Mount Saint Mary scored the final 11 goals of the opening 30 minutes to carry a commanding 11-2 lead into halftime. Kugler netted three goals prior to the intermission and Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) finished the opening half with two tallies and three assists.
 
The Mount ran its scoring run to 12 goals coming out of the break when Kugler scored for the fourth time in the game just under three minutes into the third period before Maritime finally stopped the run. The Privateers ripped off three straight goals to get to within 12-5 with 5:02 left in the third quarter, but man-up goals from Kugler and Nicholas Graziano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) spread the lead back to 14-5 late in the third.
 
Maritime outscored the Mount 4-3 in the fourth quarter, but could never get any closer than six goals. Fourth period markers from De Meo, Billy Holland (Pearl River, N.Y.) and Ryan Maraio (Staten Island, N.Y.) secured the Knights' third league win of the season.
 
Mount Saint Mary featured eight goal scorers in the game, led by five goals from Kugler who leads the team I the category with 30. Graziano and De Meo each scored three times for the Mount with Maraio finding the back of the net twice.
 
De Meo assisted on three goals and Kenneth Gallagher (Northport, N.Y.) added two helpers and three groundballs. Peter Beidl (Clifton Park, N.Y.) led the team with six groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers, with Michael Capetola (Egg Harbor Township, N.Y.) causing a pair of miscues and scooping five groundballs.
 
Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for the Knights with 10 saves, reaching double figures in stops for the ninth time this season. A.J. Galletta (Commack, N.Y.) came on to play the final 6:15 and made three saves in the contest.
 
Maritime, who was led by seven points from Danny Connell, held a 43-42 advantage in overall shots, while the Knights took the edge in shots on goal 28-23. Groundballs went to eh Privateers 39-28, but the Knights went an efficient 21-for-25 in clearing attempts and scored twice with the man-advantage.
 
Wednesday's win get the Knights back to within a game of the .500 mark overall at 5-6 and pushes its league mark to 3-2. Next up for the Mount is a trip to Kean on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. contest with the Cougars.
