Wappingers Falls, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team was back in action on Wednesday morning and suffered a tough 2-0 non-conference loss to visiting Staten Island. Freshman right hander
Jake Stewart (Wallkill, N.Y.) worked 8.0 solid innings for the Knights, matching the longest outing of his career.
Stewart surrendered eight hits in his longest outing since March 15 on Wednesday, allowing only one earned run and striking out one. Stewart worked out of jams in the seventh and eighth innings for the Mount with double plays with runners in scoring position.
The game went scoreless until the seventh inning when Staten Island plated an unearned run for the eventual deciding tally in the game. The Dolphins tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Nick Meola led off the inning with a double and later scored on a wild pitch.
Staten Island outhit the Knights in the contest 10-8 with Glenn Glennerster, Sean Becker and Jett Novertne all recording a pair of hits. Becker and Meola scored the Dolphins' runs with Novertne adding a stolen base.
Christopher Introcaso (Newburgh, N.Y.) was the lone Mount Saint Mary player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with his first double of the season.
Kevin Edgar (Southampton, N.Y.) doubled for the Knights and drew a walk.
Josh Bernstein moved to 2-0 on the season for Staten Island with a complete game effort. He held the Knights off the board on eight hits, walked one and struck out two hitters.
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 4-19 overall on the season. The Knights return to action on Thursday when they travel to Oneonta. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
