Men’s Lacrosse Upended By Montclair State

Trio of Knights score twice, Doerr makes 11 saves

Newburgh, N.Y. – Playing the fifth game of a season-long six game home stand, the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team was dealt an 18-8 Skyline Conference loss by visiting Montclair State on Saturday afternoon. Three Knights scored two goals in the game and junior goalie Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) finished with 11 saves.
 
The Knights were held without a goal in the first period on Saturday and after the Red Hawks built a 6-0 lead on a Matt Haemmerle tally early in the second quarter, got on the board with its only goal of the first half just under nine minutes into the second frame. Ryan Maraio (Staten Island, N.Y.) buried his seventh goal of the season with 6:34 left before halftime to get the Knights in the scoring column.
 
Montclair State answered the goal with the final three of the second period to push its halftime lead to 9-1. Brady Wulster, Dan Bellezza and Ryan Anzalone all scored inside the final 3:39 of the period to extend the lead to eight goals after 30 minutes.
 
The Red Hawks entered the intermission with a 24-11 advantage in shots and dominated groundballs 26-12 and face-offs 11-1.
 
The Knights and Red Hawks split eight third period goals on Saturday with Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scoring twice and Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) adding a goal and an assist. Montclair State outscored the Mount 5-3 in the fourth and spread its lead to 10 goals on a Bryan Peters marker 3:02 into the frame. De Meo added a goal and two helpers in the fourth with Michael Gallucci (Northport, N.Y.) scoring the only man-up goal of the contest.
 
Gallucci, De Meo and Kugler all finished with two goals in the game for the Knights, with De Meo posting five points after assisting on three scores. Peter Beidl (Clifton Park, N.Y.) finished with six groundballs and Tristan Earle (Millrift, Pa.) picked up five.
 
The Red Hawks were led by nine points from Haemmerle, who scored five times, and had at least two points from eight different players. Ryan Young picked up 12 groundballs, while Blaise Mantineo went 14-for-15 in face-offs and Matt Axmann finished 11-for-15 in draws.
 
Doerr made double-figure saves in a game for the eighth time this season with his 11 stops on Saturday and rounded out the day with four groundballs. Lucas Jones earned the win for the visitors with seven saves, four groundballs and a caused turnover.
 
Overall, Montclair State held in edge in shots 52-24, shots on goal 34-16, groundballs 50-27 and face-offs 25-5. The Knights finished 1-for-5 with the man-advantage and went 14-for-21 in clearing attempts.
 
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 4-6 overall on the season and to 2-2 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights close the home stand on Wednesday when they play host to Maritime. Face-off with the Privateers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
