Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) recorded his 100
th career point on Monday night in a hard fought 15-14 nonconference home loss to visiting Manhattanville.
In a tightly contested game that saw the Mount lead by as many as three goals twice, the Valiants used a four goal fourth quarter to sneak past the Knights. The Knights led by two goals at halftime following a buzzer beater goal from
Nicholas Graziano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) heading into the break and a single tally after the third period, before the visitors evened the score at 12-12 early in the final stanza.
Manhattanville pulled in front for the first time since it was 3-2 on an Ed Motherway goal with 8:25 left in regulation. The Knights tied the score twice in the final 7:35 of regulation on goals from Graziano but Manhattanville got the deciding tally off the stick of Andrew Murray with 26 seconds left in the tilt.
Mount Saint Mary finished with five different players in the scoring column, including Kugler who finished with three markers and an assist. He moved into the team lead in goals with 20 and became the sixth player in program history to reach the 100 point plateau.
Freshman
Ryan Maraio (Staten Island, N.Y.) potted a career-high four goals for the Knights and has five markers in the last two games for the Mount. Graziano also finished the night with four tallies to go along with two groundballs and a caused turnover.
Junior
Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) continued his strong junior season with six more points, scoring twice and assisting on four others. He is second on the team in goals with 18 and leads the squad with 30 assists and 48 points.
Doerr moved into first place all-time on the saves list at the Mount with his second stop early in Monday's contest. He finished with eight saves and four groundballs in the game and heads into Tuesday's conference contest with the College of Mount Saint Vincent with 431. He has stopped 99 shots this season and holds a .493 save percentage.
Freshman
Marco Spagnuolo (Staten Island, N.Y.) was one of three players to win a face-off for the Knights, leading the team with four.
Jakob Hama (Seaford, N.Y.) rounded out the game with three groundballs.
Manhattanville was led by five goals and six points from Murray, who also won 10 of the 12 face-offs he took in the game. Brandon Neff went 14-for-18 in draws for the Valiants, with Murray, Sam Hahn and T.J. Caccavo pacing the team with six groundballs each. Zach Hoffman earned the win in the cage with 10 stops.
Overall in the game, Manhattanville outshot the Mount 45-33, while the Knights finished with a 24-23 edge in shots on goal. The Valiants won the groundballs battle 38-23 and the visitors scored both times they had the man advantage.
Monday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 3-5 overall on the season. After a short turnaround, the Knights will back in action Tuesday night when they play host to Mount Saint Vincent. Face-off with the Dolphins is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
