Jessica Rini (Seaford, N.Y.) led four players in double-figures with a game-high 14 points and
Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) matched the program's single game rebound record of 22 as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team scored its second straight win to open conference play with a 70-47 road win at Purchase.
Mount Saint Mary never trailed on Thursday and opened a 19-2 lead in the first period following a Rini lay-in with 1:39 left in the opening stanza. The Knights did not allow a field goal in the first quarter until the 6:10 mark and allowed only one more bucket, an Amber Jones triple at the horn, in the period.
The Knights maintained a double-figure lead throughout the second period, but saw Purchase climb to within 11 points on an Alfa DeJesus jumper with 4:28 left before halftime. The Knights built its lead back to 18 points following a pair of
Jordyn Hellpap (Hackensack, N.J.) free-throws late in the period before heading into halftime with a 34-18 advantage.
The Mount shot 30.8-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and went 2-for-13 from the free-throw line and 8-for-12 from the charity stripe. Hellpap led the first half scoring attack with eight points, hitting one of the team's two three-pointers.
The Knights would not allow Purchase closer than 12 points in the second half and jumped out to a 20-point advantage on a Rini lay-in with 37 seconds left in the third quarter. The Mount grabbed its largest lead of the night, at 70-46, on a
Lyndsay Pace (Cranford, N.J.) free-throw with 49 seconds left in the tilt.
Rini was one of four players to reach double-figures in the contest, going 7-for-14 from the floor to go along with nine rebounds. Cleare picked up her second straight double-double, scoring 13 points and hauling in 22 rebounds. Thursday was the second time Cleare has hauled in 22 boards in a game, with the last coming on February 9, 2016 against Mount Ida.
Hellpap reached double-figures for the first time this season with 11 points, going 5-for-7 from the free-throw line, while Pace added 10 points and a pair of assists.
Maite Gritsko (Milford, Conn.) handed out five assists in the game with
Elizabeth Limonta (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) adding seven points and nine rebounds.
The Knights finished the game shooting 31.9-percent from the floor, hitting five three-point field goals. The Mount held a 64-31 advantage in rebounds in the game, including a commanding 36-11 edge on the offensive end leading to a 28-5 edge in second chance scoring.
Thursday's win evens the Mount's record at 3-3 overall and moves it to 2-0 against league rivals. The Knights will return home to host Yeshiva on December 5 with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
