Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team and St. Joseph's-L.I. played to a scoreless draw on Wednesday in the semifinal round of the Skyline Conference Championship, with the Knights advancing to the Championship Final on penalty kicks. Senior
Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) made three saves in her seventh shutout of the season.
The Knights carried play for much of the contest, heading into halftime with a 7-2 advantage in shots and ending regulation with an 18-6 edge. The Mount took all five shots in the two overtime periods, but could not solve St. Joseph's Juliana Cintron-Leonardo.
Cintron Leonardo made eight saves after halftime to keep the Knights off the board and finished the day with 11 stops in earning shutout. Riley was not forced to make a stop until the second half and made all three saves in the final 14 minutes of regulation time. She lowered her goals against average on the season to 0.91.
After playing 110:00 of scoreless soccer, the two teams went to the shootout to determine who would move on to Saturday's final. The Golden Eagles made their first two attempts, but Riley saved the third attempt and the next two missed high.
Destiny Ribadeneyra (Maybrook, N.Y.),
Gina Rivera (Washingtonville, N.Y.) and
Bridget McKeever (Wallkill, N.Y.) converted the Mount's first three attempts to send them to their eighth straight appearance in the final.
Overall, Mount Saint Mary finished with a 22-6 advantage in shots, including a 12-3 edge in shots on goal. Ribadeneyra finished with 11 shots for the Mount, including seven on goal. Corner kicks in the contest were even at 5-5.
At 15-3-2 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary will play host to second seeded Farmingdale State on Saturday for the chance to appear in the NCAA Tournament. Kick-off with the Rams is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
