Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team stepped out of conference on Wednesday and dropped a hard fought 2-1 decision in overtime to visiting #15/16 Amherst. Junior
Joey Dolan (new Paltz, N.Y.) continued his standout season with his 14
th marker of the year.
The two teams played a scoreless first half with four combined shots, before Amherst broke through early in the second frame to take a 1-0 lead. Weller Hlinomaz potted his team leading fourth goal of the season off a feed from Gabe Gitler starting from a corner kick at the 51:49 mark of the contest.
The Knights responded with the equalizer just under nine minutes later when Dolan tallied in the 61
st minute. He curled in a free-kick for his team leading 14
th goal of the year at the 60:20 mark of the match.
The game remained tied at 1-1 through regulation time, until the visitors found the game winner early in the overtime period. Kyle Kelly finished off the game winner on a corner kick started by Fikayo Ajayi 1:50 into the extra frame to give Amherst its eighth win of the year.
Dolan moved to within a goal of the conference lead with his 14
th of the season and became the first Mount Saint Mary player to score 30 goals in a career. He is also second in the league in points with 29.
Mount Saint Mary used a pair of goalkeepers with
Jakup Myrtja (Newburgh, N.Y.) making one save in 55 minutes of work with
Thomas Trainor (Patterson, N.Y.) coming on to make a pair of stops in 36 minutes. Michael Stone earned the win for Amherst with two stops on Wednesday.
Overall, Amherst finished the game with an 11-4 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. The Mammoths dominated corner kicks, 9-2.
At 8-7 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary returns to conference play on Saturday for a key matchup at St. Joseph's-L.I. Kick-off with the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
