Jessica Rini (Seaford, N.Y.) scored a career-high 24 points and joined sophomore
Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) with a double-double as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team scored an impressive 84-35 Skyline Conference victory over Purchase on Wednesday night.
Mount Saint Mary was never challenged in the game and after the score was tied at 2-2 finished the opening period on a 20-1 run to open a 19 lead after 10 minutes of action. The Mount went 10-for-17 from the floor in the first frame and Rini led six different scorers in the frame with six points.
After getting an April Uhl jumper at the 8:49 mark of the first period, Purchase went without a field goal until a Frances Minaya bucket with 8:46 left before halftime. Purchase scored 14 points in the second frame, but the Mount poured in 22 more points and shot just shy of 58-percent in the second quarter to carry a commanding 44-17 lead into halftime.
The Knights shot an efficient 58.3-percent from the floor in the first half despite going 0-for-8 from behind the three-point arc. Rini finished the half 7-for-9 from the floor and led all scorers at the intermission with 14 points.
Mount Saint Mary came out of the break and picked right up where it left off, outscoring Purchase 23-8 in the third frame and converting on 56.3-percent of its field goal chances. The Knights closed out the win with 17 points in the final frame, led by seven points from
Kassidy Hallum (Lake Grove, N.Y.).
Wednesday's win marked the third time this season the Knights have shot better than 50-percent from the floor and the 52.9-percent mark was the second highest mark of the season for the Mount. The 24.6-percent effort from Purchase was the 11
th time this season the Mount has held an opponent shy of 30-percent shooting for the game.
Rini finished her career night 12-for-15 from the floor and added 11 rebounds in 21 minutes for her fifth double-double of the season. Cleare recorded her team leading sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds against the Panthers.
Hallum scored a season-high 11 points and reached double-figures for the first time this season after going 5-for-11 from the floor and adding six rebounds.
Maite Gritsko (Milford, Conn.) handed out a game and career-high six assists for the Knights as the team helped on 21 of its 37 makes in the game.
Mount Saint Mary rounded out the win with a 50-8 edge in paint points and a commanding 21-4 advantage in offensive rebounds, leading to a 25-2 edge in second chance scoring in the win. Rini lead the team with five offensive boards on the night.
Wednesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 13-4 overall on the season and to 9-2 in Skyline Conference action. The Knights will return to play on Saturday when they travel to Patchogue, N.Y. for a date with St. Joseph's-L.I. Tip-off with the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
