Elizabeth Limonta (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) poured in a career-high 22 points and led three players in double-figures as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team eased to a 78-43 road win at St. Joseph's-L.I. Saturday afternoon.
Mount Saint Mary trailed by as many three points in the first period on Saturday, but used an 8-2 run to close the opening 10 minutes to take an 18-13 lead into the second stanza. A
Jordyn Hellpap (Hackensack, N.J.) triple started the run and five points from Limonta keyed the run that gave the Knights the lead for good in the game.
Leading by five after 10 minutes, the Knights controlled the second stanza and outscored the Golden Eagles 15-8. St. Joseph's did not score until the midway mark of the period and a
Kassidy Hallum (Lake Grove, N.Y.) jumper with just under two minutes left before halftime gave the Knights a 33-18 lead.
Mount Saint Mary shot 46.9-percent overall in the first half and knocked down a pair of three-pointers as it went to the intermission with a 33-21 advantage. Limonta led all scorers in the half with 11 points, going 5-for-5 from the floor.
The Knights maintained a double-figure advantage for the entire second half and did not allow the Golden Eagles closer than 10 points the rest of the day. A
Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) jumper with 2:53 left in the third period gave the Knights a 49-29 lead and a
Jessica Rini (Seaford, N.Y.) conversion in the closing seconds of the period spread the lead to 59-30.
Taylor Whiffen (Wading River, N.Y.) pushed the lead to 61-30 in the opening minute of the fourth period and she later gave the Knights a game-high 78-41 lead with 1:18 left in the contest as the Knights outscored St. Joseph's 46-22 in the second half.
Limonta finished the game 9-for-10 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line as she eclipsed the 20 point plateau for the first time in her career. She matched the team-high with nine rebounds and added an assist and a blocked shot in the win.
Cleare and Rini each finished the day with 12 points, with Cleare joining Limonta with nine rebounds to go along with a pair of blocked shots. Whiffen added eight bench points for the Mount and Hellpap and
Janae Graham (Orange, Conn.) handed out four assists apiece.
Mount Saint Mary finished the game shooting 51.5-percent from the floor and outrebounded St. Joseph's-L.I. 51-20 in the game. The Knights held an 18-7 edge on the offensive glass leading to a 29-7 advantage in second chance points.
Saturday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 14-4 overall, matching its win total from last season with seven regular season games remaining, and 10-2 in conference play. Next up for the Knights is a non-conference date with New Paltz on Tuesday. Tip-off with the Hawks is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
