Knights Continue Skyline Conference Schedule Against Old Westbury, USMMA

Knights welcome defending conference champion on Wednesday

Newburgh, N.Y. – Coming off a ten point home win over Farmingdale State on Saturday afternoon, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team will continue its league schedule with a pair of conference contests this week. The Mount will host Old Westbury on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. before traveling to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
 
At A Glance: The Mount stopped a two game skid on Saturday with a 51-41 win over Farmingdale State to move to 9-3 overall on the season and to 5-1 against conference rivals. The Knights did not have a player score in double-figures against the Rams, with Bridget Kelly (Farmington, Conn.) coming off the bench to lead the team with nine points and three steals. Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) paced the team with eight rebounds and added a pair of blocked shots.
 
Mount Saint Mary held Farmingdale State to 26.9-percent shooting in the contest and dominated the paint, outscoring the Rams 26-4 inside and also controlled bench points, outscoring the Farmingdale State reserves 18-0.
 
Heading into Wednesday's game, the Mount features three players scoring in double-figures, led by 11.4 points per game from Cleare. Jessica Rini (Seaford, N.Y.) is good for just under 11 points per outing, while Megan Kerutis (Merrimack, N.H.) is scoring 10.3 points per game.
 
Cleare leads the Mount on the glass, securing just under 11 caroms per game, while Kerutis is the team's top distributor with 2.5 assists per contest. Kelly is shooting better than 63-percent from the floor in 55 shot attempts, with newcomer Jordyn Hellpap (Hackensack, N.J.) pacing the team with 16 three-point field goals and 20 steals.
 
Mount Saint Mary is averaging 60.1 points per game through 12 contests and is outscoring its opponents by nearly 13 points per outing. The Knights are also controlling the glass, outrebounding rivals by 12.6 per contest. The Knights rank second in the conference in scoring defense and third in the league in rebounding margin.
 
Previewing the Panthers: The 2015-16 Skyline Conference Champions enter Wednesday's tilt winners of their last six outings and with a 10-2 overall record and a 4-2 mark in Skyline Conference play. In its last outing, Old Westbury overwhelmed Farmingdale State, winning 66-46 on Monday evening. Jasmine Robinson led three players in double-figures with 19 points and four Panthers reached double-figures in rebounds. Old Westbury held Farmingdale State to 18.5-percent shooting in the game and outscored the Rams 42-10 in the paint.
 
Robinson and Ruth Vargas led the Panthers in scoring with 13.3 points per game, while Charlotte Renker checks in with 11.5 points per outing for Old Westbury. Penker is averaging a double-double with 10.5 boards per contest with Robinson and Tori Bellings leads the way with 4.0 assists per game.
 
The Panthers outscore their opponents by over 20 points per game heading into Wednesday's contest and outrebound their foes by nearly 18 caroms per game. Old Westbury leads the conference in rebounding margin, scoring margin and scoring offense.
 
Recent History: Since 1993, the Knights and Panthers have met 37 times with the Mount holding an impressive 33-4 record overall and a 4-0 mark in the Skyline Conference Championship. The Panthers, however, have won four of the last six meetings, including season sweeps in 2013-14 and 2015-16.
 
A Look At USMMA: Conference newcomers USMMA enters a Wednesday road game at Sage with an 8-3 overall record and a 4-2 mark in conference play. The Mariners suffered a 62-51 defeat at Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday in which they shot under 33-percent from the floor and went 1-for-6 from three-point range. Kaleigh D'Arcy led USMMA with 17 points and was one of three players to secure eight rebounds in the game.
 
D'Arcy is the team's leader in scoring with nearly 13 points per outing and is shooting 46.8-percent from the floor overall and 36.8-percent from three-point distance. She also leads the squad in assists with better than two helpers per contest. Shelby Peters is good for 8.1 rebounds per game to lead the team.
 
The Mariners are scoring nearly 61 points per game and are outscoring opponents by more than 14 points per outing. USMMA also is having a strong season on the glass, averaging almost 52 rebounds per game and outrebounding its opponents by more than 17 caroms per outing. The Mariners enter the week ranked second in the conference in both scoring and rebounding margin.
 
Recent History: Saturday's matchup will be the first meeting between the two programs since February 10, 2007 when the Knights posted a 71-61 win at the Kaplan Center. The Mount has never lost to USMMA, holding a 10-0 record dating back to the 2000-01 campaign.
 
What's Next: Following the two game week, Mount Saint Mary will host St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on January 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
