Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2016 season on Sunday with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of visiting Vassar. Senior goalkeeper
Tyler Biscone (Garden City, N.Y.) finished game with two stops for the Knights.
Vassar got the eventual game winning goal in the 20
th minute when Toby Stansell cashed in a pass at the top of the box from Mattie Mrlik. Stansell put a shot under the bar at the 19:39 mark of the match for the deciding tally.
The early marker from the Brewers was the only goal of the first half as the visitors took a one goal edge into the intermission. The Brewers outshot Mount Saint Mary 5-2 in the first 45 minutes of play and also held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks at the break on Sunday.
Coming out of the half, Mount Saint Mary had its best chance of the game to get on the board when freshman
Joe Bacalhau (Woodbridge, N.J.) was denied in the 54
th minute. He ripped a shot that was turned aside by Vassar's Matt Marcelino and then tipped over the bar at the 53:35 mark of the tilt.
The Knights would stay within a goal of Vassar until the 84
th minute when the Brewers cashed in an insurance tally. Jose Novas received a through ball from Stansell and found the back of the net at 83:19 to close out the scoring in the game.
Stansell finished the game with a goal and an assist for Vassar and led the team with four shots. Novas scored on one of his three shots in the game for the visitors.
Mount Saint Mary was held to three shots in the contest, with Bacalhau,
Joey Dolan (New Paltz, N.Y.) and
Matt Fuge (Avon, Conn.) all recording attempts on the day.
Biscone made both of his saves after halftime on Sunday, while Mercalino made a stop in each period for Vassar.
Vassar finished the contest with a 14-3 advantage in shots, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks also went to the Brewers on Sunday, 8-3.
At 1-1 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary will return to action on September 7 when its makes a trip to Bard. Kick-off with the Raptors is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
