Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) matched her season-high with 13 kills and four different Knights posted at least six winners as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball recorded its fourth straight win with a 25-14, 26-24, 25-20 sweep of visiting Rutgers-Newark Tuesday night.
The Mount got off to a quick start in Tuesday's contest, hitting .300 in the opening stanza on its way to a 1-0 lead in the match. After falling behind 2-0, the Mount ran off the next five points to take the lead for good in the frame. Sabatini and
Angelia Cirigliano (Newburgh, N.Y.) each posted four winners in the set for the Knights.
Mount Saint Mary trailed for much of the middle stanza on Tuesday, but rallied from four points down to knot the score at 23-23 late in the set. A pair of kills from
Jackie Survilla (West Islip, N.Y.) and a winner from Sabatini knotted the score, before a three point run keyed by two kills from junior
Megan Williams (Glenmont, N.Y.), finished off the second set victory for the Knights.
The Knights would find themselves down again in the third set, trailing by five points in the middle stages of the frame. Down 14-9, the Mount used an 8-2 run to gain the lead and scored the final four points of the set to finish the win. A kill from freshman
Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.J.) and a service ace from Cirigliano sparked the closing run.
Sabatini rounded out the evening with 13 kills and hit .212 for the Mount to go along with nine digs and a block. Cirigliano, who was named the Skyline Conference Player of the Week earlier on Tuesday, posted seven kills and equaled the team-highs in digs with 12 and aces with two.
Survilla finished the match with seven winners, while Williams closed out a solid all-around match with six kills, seven digs and three total blocks. Burke paced the Mount with four total blocks on the night to go along with three kills.
Kim Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) finished the match with 20 assists and added seven digs.
Rutgers-Newark was led by 11 winners from Karolina Kopacz and received a match-high 27 assists from Kathy Hormaza and a match-high 16 digs from Sue Riley. Rebecca Ford finished the night with five total blocks for the Scarlet Raiders.
Overall, Mount Saint Mary posted a 38-31 edge in kills and doubled up the Scarlet Raiders in aces, 6-3. Rutgers-Newark finished the night with a 6-4 edge in total team blocks.
Tuesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 6-12 overall and to 5-0 at the Kaplan Center in 2016. The Knights will look for their fifth straight win on Thursday when they travel to Pratt. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
