Strong Second Half Sends Mount Saint Mary Past Yeshiva

Fuge nets game winner, Bacalhau posts three points

Teaneck, N.J. – Sophomore Matt Fuge (Avon, Conn.) scored the game winning goal and freshman Joe Bacalhau (Woodbridge, N.J.) posted a goal and an assist as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team rallied for a 3-2 road win at Yeshiva. The victory is the third straight for the Knights to open conference play.

Mount Saint Mary found itself down by two scores early in the contest on Sunday night after Albert Dichy scored for the Maccabees in the 10th minute and Itamar Ben David followed with his sixth goal of the year in the 12th minute to give Yeshiva the early advantage.

The Knights would get on the board and cut their deficit in half in the 17th minute when Joey Dolan (New Paltz , N.Y.) potted his team leading fifth goal of the season. He finished off Mike Zanfardino's (Saint James, N.Y.) third helper of the year at 16:14 to get the Mount to within 2-1 heading into the intermission.

Yeshiva outshot Mount Saint Mary 7-6 in the initial 45 minutes on Sunday and took three of the four corner kicks in the first half. Each team's goalkeeper made a single save prior to the break.

Coming out of halftime, Mount Saint Mary would even the score at 2-2 when Bacalhau found the back of the net for the first time in his career just over eight minutes into the second stanza. He made a run down the right side and found a hole between the keeper's arm and body at 53:14.

The game remained deadlocked until the 73rd minute when Fuge decided the tilt with his second goal of the season. Bacalhau sent a cross through the box that Fuge finished off for his first goal since the season opener at 72:43 to secure the victory for the Mount.

The Knights held the Maccabees to just four shots after halftime, outshooting Yeshiva 10-4 in the second frame.

With his goal, Dolan moved his team lead in points to 12, while Fuge became the fourth different Knight with a game winning goal on the season.  Bacalhau is now the fifth player to have a goal and an assist on the year for the Knights and Zanfardino picked up his first assist since the season opener, giving him a team-high three on the season.

Senior Tyler Biscone (Garden City, N.Y.) won his third straight decision on Sunday, making a pair of saves in the win. Maor Feinstein made three stops for the Maccabees, including two in the second half.

Overall, Mount Saint Mary finished the game with a 16-11 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Yeshiva doubled up the Knights in corner kicks on the night, 4-2.

Sunday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to within a game of .500 overall at 4-5 on the season and moves it to a perfect 3-0 in Skyline Conference play.
