Newburgh, N.Y. – A pair of second half goals helped the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team rally to a hard fought 2-1 home Skyline Conference victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore
Bereket Watts (Southold, N.Y.) scored the game winner to give the Knights their fourth straight win.
Mount Saint Vincent got on the board first in the opening half when Andrew Gomez scored his third goal of the season for the Dolphins in the 28
th minute. He took a free kick from 25 yards out and drove a shot inside the left post at 27:49 to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Gomez marker would be the only goal of the first half and the visitors took a 5-2 edge in shots into the intermission. Mount Saint Mary took the only two corner kicks prior to the break and neither goalkeeper made a stop in the initial 45 minutes.
Coming out of halftime, Mount Saint Mary would get the game even at 1-1 on an own goal. Keeper
Tyler Biscone (Garden City, N.Y.) took a free kick for the Knights on the defensive side of midfield and drove the kick into box. The kick was headed in off a Mount Saint Vincent defender at the 50:42 mark of the contest to bring the Knights even at 1-1.
The game remained deadlocked until the 73
rd minute when Watts put away the game winner at 72:41.
Eric Hayes (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) started the play on the end line and found
Joey Dolan (New Paltz, N.Y.) who touched the ball to Watts. The sophomore striker drove the deciding tally into the left corner to close out the scoring in the game. It was his fourth goal of the season and his first game winner.
Mount Saint Vincent would get off a pair of shots and have a corner kick in the final 2:30 of the regulation, but could not find the equalizer. Biscone stopped a Guy Horcasitas header with 2:29 left in the game and the Mount defense blocked a Kevin Jardines attempt with 38 seconds left in the contest.
Biscone finished the contest with four saves, all coming in the second half, to earn the win. Mount Saint Vincent keeper, David Melchor, also stopped four shots in the loss.
Mount Saint Mary was outshot in the game overall 14-9, but held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks in the contest were even at 5-5.
The win brings Mount Saint Mary back to the .500 mark overall at 5-5 and pushes it to a perfect 4-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a trip to Maritime on Tuesday night. Kick-off with the Privateers is set for 7:30 p.m.
