Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team opened Skyline Conference play on Friday night with an impressive 9-0 win over Sarah Lawrence. Three Knights finished the game with two goals, including
Theresa Stinson (Troy, N.Y.) who posted a game-high six points.
Mount Saint Mary opened the scoring early on when
Emily Scheuer (North Babylon, N.Y.) floated a ball over the Sarah Lawrence keeper in the eighth minute for what proved to be the deciding tally in the contest.
The Knights struck again in the 29
th minute when
Maeve O'Sullivan (Garden City Park, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the first time this season and opened a 3-0 lead when Scheuer found the back of the net for the second time in the game in the 32
nd minute. Sophomore
Jackie Davis (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) assisted on the O'Sullivan tally and
Destiny Ribadeneyra (Maybrook, N.Y.) helped on Scheuer's second tally of the night.
Mount Saint Mary spread its lead to four goals just over two minutes following the Scheuer marker when O'Sullivan scored from the top of the box and
Nicole Cavallo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) sent the Mount to halftime with a 5-0 lead with her second goal of the season with just shy of 10 minutes left before the break.
The Mount added four more goals in the second half on Friday, including the first career goals for
Jenn Grasso (Sweden, N.Y.),
Theresa Stinson and
Genevieve Stinson (Troy, N.Y.).
Mount Saint Mary had eight players with at least one point and saw
Theresa Stinson and O'Sullivan finish with a goal and a helper. Stinson moved into the team lead in points with her scoring output and Ribadeneyra moved her team-high assist total to five with a pair of helpers on the night.
Junior
Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) and freshman
Molly Jensen (Bayport, N.Y.) combined on the shutout without having to make a save in the contest. Jensen played the second half in her first career appearance for the Knights. Sarah Lawrence keeper, Rachell Mosquera rounded out the game with nine saves for the Gryphons.
For the game, Mount Saint Mary had a commanding 27-1 advantage in overall shots, including an 18-0 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks also went to the Mount on Friday, 7-0.
At 2-5 overall and 1-0 in league play, Mount Saint Mary will return to the road on Sunday when they travel to Yeshiva. Kick-off with the Maccabees at Randall's Island is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
