Mount Saint Mary Takes Skyline Conference Set From Yeshiva

Knights total six extra base hits over two games

Newburgh, N.Y. – Playing its first games on campus in 2016, the Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team swept a Skyline Conference doubleheader from Yeshiva on Tuesday, topping the Maccabees 12-2 and 6-5. The Mount totaled six extra base hits in set, including a home run from Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) in game one.

After falling behind by a run in the second in the opener, the Knights played four runs in the third and five more in the fourth to open a 9-1 advantage. Cahill got the Mount on the board with a home run to lead off the third inning and Joey Pugliese (Highland, N.Y.) added a two-run double in the third.

Blake Keenan (Fishkill, N.Y.) and Tom Huvane (Eastchester, N.Y.) singled to start the big fourth inning and later scored on a triple off the bat of Louie DeAngelis (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Rob Peccerillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with a run scoring triple and later scored on a groundout from Nicholas Terzulli (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

Yeshiva would get a run back in the top of the sixth, before Mount Saint Mary put the game away with two tallies in the bottom of the fifth and a single run in the sixth. Terzulli and Jasper Bradley (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) recorded run scoring singles in the fifth and DeAngelis singled home Louie Rivera (Linden, N.J.) to close out the scoring in the sixth.

The Mount recorded 10 hits in the opener with DeAngelis going 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored and four RBI. He was the only player in the lineup with multiple hits, while Peccerillo scored three times and Keenan crossed with two runs.

Sophomore Joe Pillitteri (Wallkill, N.Y.) picked up his first win of the season after working 5.0 innings. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out six. Nick Peterson (Stormville, N.Y.) worked two scoreless innings of relief, striking out four.

In game two, the Mount found itself in a 4-0 hole before rebounding with a single run in the first and two more in the second. Jimmy Papineau (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) drove in the Mount's first run with a single before Bradley delivered Vincenzo Pepe (Middletown, N.Y.) with a triple in the second. Bradley later scored on a two-out bunt base hit from Cahill.

Mount Saint Mary got the game tied when Bradley scored on a Rivera single in the fourth and took its first lead of the game when Albert Estwick Jr. (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) was pushed home on a Pepe run scoring single.

The Knights scored an important insurance run in the sixth inning when Cahill scored on a throwing error at third base to give the Mount a 6-4 edge. The Maccabees put runners on second and third with one out in the seventh and tallied a run on an error and had the potential tying run thrown out at the plate.

The Knights picked up 10 more hits in game two, with Cahill going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Pepe and Bradley each picked up two hits, with Bradley leading the Knights with two runs scored. Five different Knights finished the game with an RBI.

James McCleary (Floral Park, N.Y.) worked 5.1 innings to pick up his initial win of the season. He allowed four runs on seven hits, striking out four. Sean Betterly (East Meadow, N.Y.) earned the save with 1.2 innings of work, fanning two.

Tuesday's sweep moves Mount Saint Mary to 11-19 overall on the season and to 5-4 against conference opponents. The Knights will continue its six game home stand on Saturday when they play host to Maritime. First pitch with the Privateers is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
