Baseball Falls Twice At St. Joseph’s-L.I.

Huvane drives in two runs in game two

Patchogue, N.Y. – After splitting with preseason favorite Old Westbury on Saturday, the Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team was swept on Sunday at St. Joseph's-L.I. by scores of 7-0 and 3-2. Freshman Tom Huvane (Eastchester, N.Y.) drove in both runs for the Knights in game two.
 
Mount Saint Mary was held to just three hits in Sunday's opener, with Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), Vincenzo Pepe (Middletown, N.Y.) and Huvane collecting hits in the game. Huvane finished with his seventh double of the season in the ninth inning.
 
St. Joseph's got all the scoring it needed in the fourth inning when Daniel Campanelli singled home a run. The Golden Eagles blew open the game with six tallies in the sixth with the big blow coming when Brendan Sullivan connected on a three-run home run.
 
Kevin Duffy (Wallingford, Conn.) suffered the loss for Mount Saint Mary after working 5.0 innings. He allowed seven hits and struck out seven in falling to 3-3 on the season. Stephan Sookdeo (Carmel, N.Y.) came on to throw 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.
 
Campanelli rounded out the game 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI for the Golden Eagles with Joseph Lynn picking up two hits and scoring a run.
 
Josh Outsen picked up the win on the mound, throwing 7.2 shutout innings. He allowed one hit and struck out five as he moved to 2-3 on the season.
 
In game two, St. Joseph's broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fifth inning before the Mount rallied for a pair of runs in the sixth. Nick Girardi doubled home a run for the Golden Eagles in the fifth and Mike Griffo drove home two with a single.
 
Trailing by three runs, the Knights got singles from Kristopher Fragomeni (Beacon, N.Y.) and Cahill to open the sixth inning and both players scored on Huvane's second double of the day with two outs in the inning.
 
The Knights outhit the Golden Eagles 6-5 in game two, with Louie Rivera going 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Huvane doubled and drove in both runs for the Mount with Fragomeni and Cahill scoring runs.
 
Christopher Ruggiero (Newburgh, N.Y.) suffered the loss and fell to 0-3 on the season. He worked 5.0 innings, allowing four hits and five walks, while striking out five. Brandon Lubrano picked up the victory with 5.2 innings of work, fanning nine.
 
Sunday's sweep drops Mount Saint Mary to 9-19 overall and to 3-4 in conference play. The Knights will return to action on Tuesday when they play host to Yeshiva. The midweek doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on the Mount Saint Mary campus.
