Fishkill, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team returned to action at home Tuesday afternoon, falling to visiting John Jay by a score of 11-8. Sophomore
Blake Keenan (Fishkill, N.Y.) led the offensive attack with three hits and two runs scored.
After falling behind 5-0 early on Tuesday, the Knights battled back with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to even the score with five at-bats remaining.
Vincenzo Pepe (Middletown, N.Y.) and
Joey Pugliese (Highland, N.Y.) each drove in a run with base hits and senior
Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) evened the tilt with a two-run single that delivered
Albert Estwick Jr. (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) and Pugliese.
The game remained tied until the top of the seventh when the visitors plated four unearned runs. The Bloodhounds tacked on what proved to be two important runs in the eighth following a run scoring double from Charlee Rodriguez and a single from Jonathan Warasila.
Trailing 11-6 heading into its final at-bat, the Knights plated three runs and put the tying run on base in a ninth inning. The Mount recorded just one hit in the ninth, a double from Keenan, and took advantage of three walks and two hit batsmen.
Jasper Bradley (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) drove in a run when he was hit and
Jimmy Papineau (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) delivered a run with a walk.
Kristopher Fragomeni (Beacon, N.Y.) drew a walk to load the bases and put the tying run on base with two outs, but Warasila came on to get a fly out to end the threat and pick up his first save of the season.
Keenan finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, walk and two runs scored. Pepe collected two hits, scored twice and drove in a run.
Tom Huvane (Eastchester, N.Y.) doubled and scored twice for the Knights.
John Jay had four players finish with three hits, including Dylan Laudano who went 3-for-5 with a run and three RBI. Brian Garcia rounded out the game 3-for-6 with two runs and a pair RBI.
Jurrell Diaz picked up the win in relief for the Bloodhounds, working 4.1 innings and allowing one base hit.
James McCleary (Floral Park, N.Y.) suffered the loss, surrendering four unearned runs in 2.1 innings.
Tuesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 5-14 overall on the season. The Knights will look to stop a five game slide on Friday when they play host to Plattsburgh. First pitch at Dutchess Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
