Knights Suffer Two Losses To Seahawks

Huvane homers in collegiate debut

St. Mary's City, Md. – The  Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team opened the 2016 season on Saturday with a pair of non-conference losses at St. Mary's (Md.) The Knights dropped Saturday's opener 7-2 and fell in the backend of the set 6-2. Four Knights collected two hits in the second game and freshman Tom Huvane (Eastchester, N.Y.) hit his first career home run in game one.
 
The Knights jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game one when Louie Rivera (Linden, N.J.) crossed the plate on a balk. Rivera started the inning by working a two out walk and later stole second. After advancing on an infield single from Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), he scored on the miscue to move the Knights in front 1-0.
 
St. Mary's would move in front 2-1 in the home half of fourth inning when Holden Mitchell drove in the tying run with a triple and Anthony Cangelosi drove in Marshall with an infield single to push the Seahawks to a 2-1 advantage.
 
Mount Saint Mary knotted the score at 2-2 in the fifth when Huvane connected on a home run to left field to lead off the inning.
 
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the sixth then the Seahawks erupted for five runs on seven hits. After the first two hitters of the inning struck out, the next seven batters recorded base hits. Five different players drove in a run for St. Mary's in the inning to close out the scoring in the game.
 
Cahill, Huvane and Vincenzo Pepe (Middletown, N.Y.) each recorded a hit in the game for the Mount with Huvane and Rivera scoring runs. Rivera drew three walks in the game for the Mount and stole a base.
 
St. Mary's had eight different players record a hit in game one, and a trio of players with two safeties. Hunter Mohler finished the game 1-for-2 with a run, an RBI and a pair of walks.
 
Chris Wolfe (Beacon, N.Y.) made the start in game one and worked 4.0 innings for the Mount, allowing two runs on three hits. He fanned one and walked four in his initial outing of the season. Ryan Turton (Westbury, N.Y.) suffered the loss in relief after surrendering four runs in 1.2 innings of work.
 
In game two, the Mount fell behind 2-0 after one inning before closing the gap to 2-1 when Jimmy Papineau (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) scored on an error in the second inning.
 
After the Seahawks plated another run in the third inning, the Knights got back to within a run for a second time in the game in the top of the fourth when Blake Keenan (Fishkill, N.Y.) scored on a Ryan Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) single.
 
St. Mary's would spread its lead 4-2 in the fifth on a Hayden Ferington RBI double and closed out the scoring in the game with a pair of tallies in the sixth to earn the sweep. Sean Goodie keyed the sixth inning with a home run for the Seahawks.
 
Mount Saint Mary outhit St. Mary's 10-7 in game two and had four players with a pair of hits. Cahill, Keenan, Hayes and Albert Estwick Jr (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) and recorded two hits in the contest. Papineau rounded out the game with a run and a pair of walks for the Knights.
 
Mohler and Ferington each drove in a pair of runs for the Seahawks in game two, with Ferington finishing up with a pair of doubles.
 
Sophomore Joe Pillitteri (Wallkill, N.Y.) took the loss in game two, working 4.0 innings and allowing four runs. Riley Stong (Newburgh, N.Y.) made his season debut with 2.0 innings of relief work, striking out one batter.
 
Saturday's sweep drops Mount Saint Mary to 0-2 overall on the season. The Knights and Seahawks will close out the weekend series on Sunday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
