Knights See Unbeaten Streak End At USMMA

Biscone makes two saves, Hayes records two shots

Kings Point, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team saw its 10 game unbeaten streak stopped on Saturday with a 3-0 loss at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in a battle for first place in the Skyline Conference. Senior Tyler Biscone (Garden City, N.Y.) finished with a pair of saves for the Knights.

USMMA would break through with the eventual game winning goal in the 10th minute when Gavin Yingling potted his first of three goals on the day at the 9:34 mark of the contest. He finished off a combination from Michael Montesclaros and David Burkhardt to give the Mariners all the scoring they would need in the game.

Yingling would strike again in the 22nd minute with his 16th goal of the season when he buried a lead pass from Tim Hughes at 21:05 to send USMMA into the intermission with a two goal advantage.

The Mariners held a 6-4 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes and took four of the five corner kicks in the opening period. Each keeper made a single save prior to the intermission.

Coming out of the break, Yingling closed the scoring in the game with his third marker of the game in the 53rd minute. With his scoring output, Yingling leads the conference in goals with 17 and points with 36.

Biscone closed the game with two saves and saw his shutout streak end at 587 minutes. USMMA keeper, Cory Maier, earned the shutout with a single stop.

The Mariners finished the game with a 13-6 advantage in shots, outshooting the Mount 7-2 in the second half. Eric Hayes (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) led the Mount with two shots and recorded the Knights' only shot on goal.

Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 10-6-1 overall on the season and to 9-1-0 in conference play. The Knights will close out the regular season on Wednesday when they travel to Purchase. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
