Old Westbury, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team suffered a 69-47 Skyline Conference loss on the road at Old Westbury Saturday afternoon. Sophomore
Jessica Rini (Seaford, N.Y.) finished with 10 points and recorded her fourth double-double of the season.
The Knights and Panthers played a tightly contested opening 10 minutes that saw the Mount take a 13-12 lead on a pair of
Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) free-throws with 37 ticks left in the first quarter. Old Westbury answered with a bucket from Crystal Barnes on its next possession to carry a 14-13 lead into the second period.
Cleare quickly gave the Knights the advantage back with a bucket to open the second stanza, the Mount's final advantage of the game. The Knights were held to just six points in the second quarter and saw Old Westbury use a 10-0 run to close the quarter to carry a 33-19 lead into the intermission. Mount Saint Mary went without a point over the final 4:16 of the period and without a field goal over the final 7:53.
Mount Saint Mary went just 7-for-33 from the floor in the opening 20 minutes on Saturday with Cleare leading the way with six points. Old Westbury converted at a 48.3-percent rate prior to the break and was led by 10 points from Jasmine Robinson.
The Knights would not be able to pull any closer than 12 points in the second half on Saturday and saw Old Westbury grab its largest lead of the game, a 27 point advantage at 60-33, with just under nine minutes remaining in regulation time.
The Knights shot under 30-percent after halftime, going 9-for-31 from the floor, while Old Westbury continued to convert at an efficient 44.4-percent rate. Rini scored eight of her 10 points after the break, going 4-for-6 from the floor after halftime.
Rini finished the game 4-for-13 from the floor, adding a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with three assists and a pair of blocked shots.
Bridget Kelly (Farmington, Conn.) chipped in with nine points with
Daisha Madden (Baltimore, Md.) and
Brooke Dennin (Glenham, N.Y.) adding eight and seven points, respectively.
Freshman
Elizabeth Limonta (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) came off the bench to secure seven rebounds, while classmate
Megan Kerutis (Merrimack, N.H.) handed out a team-high four assists.
Old Westbury was led by a game-high 17 points from Robinson with Barnes and Raven Pentz adding 12 and 11 points. Pentz led all players in the game with six assists.
The Panthers, who shot 46.2-percent from the floor in the game, outscored Mount Saint Mary 40-22 in the paint and 18-2 in points off of turnovers.
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 5-8 overall on the season and to 3-3 against conference rivals. The Knights will be back on the floor Tuesday evening when they travel to Sage. Tip-off with the Gators is set for 6:00 p.m.
