Albany, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team was edged in overtime on Tuesday evening on the road at Sage by a score of 62-58.
Janae Graham (Orange, Conn.) led the offensive attack with 13 points, while freshman
Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) secured 13 rebounds.
Mount Saint Mary led for most of the first quarter on Tuesday, before a three-pointer from Macie Holmes pushes Sage in front 13-12 after 10 minutes of action.
The Knights quickly regained the advantage on a
Jessica Rini (Seaford, N.Y.) conversion early in the second frame and ran out to their largest lead of the game, a 25-19 advantage, on a
Bridget Kelly (Farmington, Conn.) bucket with 54 seconds left before halftime.
Following the Kelly basket, Sage scored the final four points of the quarter, including a bucket from Frankie Pearon with two seconds left in before the break to bring Sage to within 25-23 at the half.
Mount Saint Mary finished the first half shooting 31.3-percent from the floor, but went just 1-for-6 from behind the arc. The Gators also struggled from the floor, shooting 25-percent before the break, but converted on five three-point field goals to remain close.
The entire third quarter was played in a four point window on Tuesday, with Knights getting a Rini basket with 14 seconds left in the quarter to move in front 40-36. Sage came right back with a three-pointer at the horn from Holms to pull back within a point heading into the fourth period.
Sage moved out to a three point lead early in the fourth quarter, before the Knights got back-to-back baskets from
Megan Kerutis (Merrimack, N.H.) and Graham to reclaim a 44-43 lead with just over eight minutes left in regulation time.
The lead would change hands ix more times of the remainder of the fourth period with the Knights converting just a pair of field goals over the final 3:50 of regulation. Kelly gave the Mount a 53-52 lead with 32 seconds left in the fourth quarter, before Pearson split a pair of free-throws with 14 ticks left to send the game into overtime.
Rini gave the Mount its only lead of the overtime period with a bucket with 3:13 left, before a three-pointer from Emily Parlsow gave Sage a 57-55 advantage. The Knights tied the score at 57-57 on a Kerutis free-throw, but saw Sage score five of the final six points of the game to escape with the win.
Over the second half and overtime, Mount Saint Mary misfired on seven free-throws and was outscored from the line 14-9 over the final 25 minutes of the contest.
Graham rounded out the contest 5-for-19 from the floor, hitting two of the team's three three-point field goals in the game. She closed a solid all-around game with three rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Knights.
Kerutis and Rini each finished the game with 11 points, with Rini securing eight rebounds and handing out three assists. Kerutis paced the team with four assists, adding four rebounds.
Cleare hauled in 13 rebounds for the Mount, adding a pair of blocked shots. Freshman
Elizabeth Limonta (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) grabbed 10 boards and chipped in with seven points on Tuesday.
Sage was led by a game-high 18 points from Holmes with Pearson and Genevieve Schoff adding 15 and 14 points, respectively. Schoff closed out a double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with two blocked shots.
Mount Saint Mary finished the game shooting 28.8-percent as a team and went just 3-for-11 from behind the arc and 13-for-23 from the free-throw line. The Gators knocked in eight triples and shot 42.1-percent from bonus distance and converted on 80-percent of its free-throw attempts.
Tuesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 5-9 overall and to 3-4 in league play. The Knights will return home on Saturday when they welcomes St. Joseph's-L.I. to the Kaplan Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
