Women’s Soccer Defeats Principia, 1-0, in UT-Dallas Comet Cup Opener

RICHARDSON, Texas. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team advanced to 2-0 on the season after another 1-0 victory, this time over Principia College (1-2) Saturday afternoon in the first matchup of the University of Texas at Dallas Comet Cup, hosted by UT-Dallas at the UTD Soccer Field.

Senior midfielder Melissa Guillemette (Branford, Conn.) now has both of the Knights' goals on the season, as she scored what eventually became her second game-winner of the year in the 32nd minute of the contest. She found herself five yards away from the goal, one-on-one with the keeper, and was able to slip the ball into the left side of the net to give the Knights a first-half lead.

Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) made it 2-for-2 on the season with her second shutout in as many games. She received plenty of help from her back line, as she needed just two saves to keep Principia off the board. Panther netminder Genevieve Smith stopped six shots, but allowed a first-half goal to suffer the loss.

Moments before Guillemette put the Knights up a goal, sophomore defender Bridget McKeever (Wallkill, N.Y.) nearly gave the Knights the lead when a header attempt was blocked, and then a shot immediately after clanked off the crossbar. In the closing seconds of the game, Principia's Rachel Perea managed to fire off one final shot, but Riley was able to smother it before it could get close to the net.

Though the scoreboard did not reflect it, the Knights were the clear aggressors, firing off 20 shots in the game, while their opponents managed just seven. They also earned eight corner kicks, and did not allow the Panthers to have any.

The Knights look to improve to 3-0, as well as go a perfect 2-0 at the UT-Dallas Comet Cup, as they take on tournament host UT-Dallas on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. EST.
