Women’s Soccer Suffers First Defeat of 2015 to UT-Dallas, 3-0

RICHARDSON, Texas. – In the final matchup of the University of Texas-Dallas Comet Cup, the Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team succumbed to the tournament's host UT-Dallas by a final score of 3-0 Sunday afternoon at the UTD Soccer Field. The loss is the first on the young season for the Knights, who fall to 2-1 on the year. UT-Dallas improves to a perfect 3-0 with the victory.

The Comets took the lead early on in the matchup, as Jacqueline Kaufman set herself up with a steal for a breakaway down the field, and beat sophomore goalkeeper Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) for the first time this year, in the 9th minute to put the home team up by a goal. In the final minutes of the opening half, MaKayla Forsberg found Tori Edge sitting in front of the goal with a cross from the right side, and Edge redirected it into the net from five yards away to put the Comets up, 2-0, with a minute to play before halftime.

In the 74th minute, Amanda Avalos found Millie Atkins standing a few yards in front of the goal, allowing her to redirect a cross from the left side with her head and into the back of the net to put the hosts up by the eventual final score of 3-0.

Riley falls to 2-1 on the year after giving up her first three goals of the season. She made a season-high nine saves in the process. Monica Dallacasa picked up the win for the Comets, making five stops for the shutout.

The Knights did not go down without any scoring opportunities in Sunday's matchup. Freshman forward Maeve O'Sullivan (Garden City Park, N.Y.) put both of her shot attempts on net, and three other Knights were able to force Dallacasa into making saves.

The Comets were able to string together more offensive opportunities, firing off 21 total shots, while the Knights took six. UT-Dallas also attempted all four corner kicks in Sunday's contest.

After suffering their first defeat of the year, the Knights will look to bounce back when they return home to take on Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, Sept. 9. The game is set to kick off at 5:30 p.m., followed by men's soccer against Bard College at 8 p.m.
