Men’s Soccer Falls in Union Classic Opener to RPI, 3-0

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – In the first matchup of the 2015 edition of the Union Soccer Classic on Friday, the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback at the hands of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at College Park Field. The loss drops the Knights to 0-2 early on in the season, while RPI advances to 2-0.

The Engineers first got on the board in the 10th minute of Friday's matchup when Matt Carberry scored off a feed from Devon Baughen for what turned out to be the game winner. Steven Collins added another for RPI at the 33:33 mark off an assist from Paul Lentine to double the lead to 2-0, an advantage the Engineers carried into halftime.

Baughen netted his second of the game in the 58th minute, leaving the Engineers up by the eventual final score of 3-0.

Senior goalkeeper Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.), who faced 13 shots while playing just the first half, suffered the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. He stopped five shots, but allowed a pair of goals. Junior netminder Tyler Biscone (Garden City, N.Y.) took over for the second frame, yielding a goal and making two saves. RPI keeper Ryan Nealon picked up the shutout victory, needing to make just one save in the process.

The Knights will look to bounce back in another tough matchup, as they take on tournament host Union College (N.Y.) Saturday evening, Sept. 5, at College Park Field. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
