Newburgh, N.Y. – Led by a goal and assist each from
Michael Blaauboer (Latham, N.Y.) and
Fred Stark (Hollis, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary Men's Soccer team scored a 4-1 Skyline Conference win over visiting Maritime on Tuesday night.
The Knights opened the scoring early on Tuesday when
Adam Palumbo (East Islip, N.Y.) scored his third goal of the season just 3:01 into the contest. He headed in a crossing pass off the right wing from Stark to give Mount Saint Mary an early one goal advantage.
After Maritime evened the score at 1-1 on a Kieran Donnelly tally in the 10
th minute, the Knights struck twice just over two minutes apart to open a 3-1 lead. Stark scored his first of the season off a rebound at the 13:21 mark of the tilt and Mike Zanfardino (Saint James, N.Y.) added his first of the year at 15:27 off a pass from Blaauboer to send the Knights into halftime with a two goal edge.
Over the opening 45 minutes, Mount Saint Mary outshot Maritime 11-3 and took all four corner kicks in before the intermission. Maritime goalkeeper Karl Weber was forced to make four saves in the first half, with Mount Saint Mary net minder,
Tyler Biscone, stopping one shot.
Coming out of halftime, the Knights closed out the scoring in the 54
th minute when Blaauboer netted his fourth goal of the season off a failed clearing attempt. The goal gives him a share of the team lead in markers and moves him into the team lead in points with 11.
Mount Saint Mary finished the game with a 13-8 advantage in shots, with Stark leading the team with three attempts.
Matthew Minniter (Mahopac, N.Y.) and
Matthew Fuge (Avon, Conn.) each rounded out the night with a pair of shots.
Biscone picked up the win in goal for Mount Saint Mary after making the one save in the opening period.
Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.) came on to play the second stanza and made a pair of stops for the Knights. Weber closed the night with four saves for the Privateers.
Tuesday's win stopped a two game slide for Mount Saint Mary and moved it to 3-7-1 overall and to 2-1-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a home conference contest against Sarah Lawrence on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off with the Gryphons is set for 3:00 p.m.
