NEWARK, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision Wednesday evening to Rutgers-Newark in a non-conference matchup at Alumni Field. The loss drops the Knights to 1-5-1 overall on the season, while the Scarlet Raiders improve to 6-2.
Both teams were even for the part of the first half, but the Scarlet Raiders broke a scoreless tie in the 30th minute. Charlie O'Connell redirected Dylan Elias' cross, which came directly off a corner from Adrian Mayorga, into the net to put the home team up by a goal. Timothy Farias score 29 seconds later off another assist from Mayorga to double the lead for Rutgers-Newark. O'Connell did it again in the 42nd minute, off yet another assist from Mayorga, to make it a 3-0 advantage for the Scarlet Raiders heading into the break.
The Knights got on the board early on in the second frame after senior defender
Ivan Dorador (Valley Stream, N.Y.) netted a penalty kick for his first goal of the year, cutting the deficit to two. Rutgers-Newark got one back at the 77:57 mark when Justin Thompson one-timed a ball that had been punched away by the keeper, giving the home team the 4-1 edge.
Matt Broomall picked up the victory for Rutgers-Newark after making one save and not allowing a single goal in one half of play. Junior goalkeeper
Tyler Biscone (Garden City, N.Y.) suffered his first loss of the season, yielding four goals and stopping one shot.
The Scarlet Raiders managed to take a 17-11 advantage in shot attempts in the game, but the Knights put seven on net, while the home team got five on target. Rutgers-Newark recorded four of the game's six corner kicks.
The Knights will look to bounce back when they open Skyline Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 19. They host St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn in the first-ever conference meeting between the two schools. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
