PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team tallied its first win of the 2015 campaign on Saturday, as the Knights shutout Nazareth College, 2-0, in the opening day of the Best Western-Ground Round Cardinal Classic, hosted by Plattsburgh State University. The Knights advance to 1-3-1 on the season with the win, and move on to take on host Plattsburgh in Sunday's championship game.
Senior goalkeeper
Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.) picked up his first shutout of the season and improved to 1-3-1 overall on the season. He needed just three stops to pick up the win. Nazareth netminder Alex McLean allowed two goals and matched Peluso with three saves to suffer the loss.
Sophomore forward
Eric Hayes (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) got the Knights on the board just 65 seconds into the second half off a give-and-go with freshman midfielder
Michael Blaauboer (Latham, N.Y.), putting them up, 1-0. In the 83rd minute, junior defender
Elmer Moran (Brentwood, N.Y.) provided some insurance with the first goal of his career off a helper from freshman midfielder
Connor Lynch (Clifton Park, N.Y.).
The Knights doubled up Nazareth with 12 shots to just six in Saturday's victory. Nazareth managed to hold a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Tournament host Plattsburgh State defeated Colby-Sawyer, 8-1, on Saturday. The Knights now face off with the Cardinals on Sunday, Sept. 13, in the championship game of the Cardinal Classic in a 2:30 p.m. match.
