NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Tyler Lundgren took advantage of having open space in the goal box, and fired home the only goal of the game in the 105th minute, giving the State University of New York at New Paltz the season-opening 1-0 victory over the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team in double overtime Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
New Paltz rises to 1-0 on the early season with the victory, while the Knights start their season with a 0-1 mark.
Senior goalkeeper
Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.) turned in a brilliant effort for nearly 105 minutes for the Knights, turning away six shots and taking the ball away from the Hawks' strikers many a time before a shot could be attempted. Despite the strong showing, Peluso drops to 0-1 on the young campaign, while Hawks' netminder John Guzzo starts his season 1-0.
The Hawks had the more aggressive offense in Tuesday's opener, firing off 25 shots, while the Knights managed just eight on the afternoon. However, only seven of those 25 went on target, while Mount Saint Mary put two on net. The Hawks were unable to take advantage of a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Eight different Knights attempted shots in Tuesday's matchup. Lundgren's goal was the first in his career since transferring to New Paltz.
With one game under their belts in the 2015 campaign, the Knights will head up to Schenectady, N.Y. on Friday, Sept. 4, where they will take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the first day of the Union Soccer Classic, hosted by Union College. The game is set to kick off at 4:30 p.m. The Knights will then take on host Union on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m.
