Men’s Lacrosse Takes Down Bard, 12-10

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's lacrosse team (2-2) fell behind early, but a big run in the second and third quarters provided the boost the Knights needed to defeat Bard College (1-1) by a score of 12-10 Wednesday evening at Kaplan Field.

After trailing, 3-1, after a goal by Bard's John Palermo with 9:35 left in the second, the Knights scored the next seven goals from the second quarter into the third to take an 8-3 lead. Bard started to push by later on in the contest, outscoring the Knights, 7-4, the rest of the way, but the Knight lead was too large as they held on by two.

Senior midfielder Jake Robison (Franklin Square, N.Y.) had his best game of the young season, scoring four times to lead the Knights in the win. He also led the team with six ground balls. Freshman midfielder Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) turned in his second four-point game of the year, providing the Knights with two goals and a pair of assists. He leads the Knights with 12 points through four games, and is tied for the team lead with seven goals.

The game was not without some late dramatics, as a 6-1 run for Bard that spanned over 14 minutes across the third and fourth quarters got the Raptors back within a goal at 11-10 with 3:30 left in the game. Just 17 seconds later, freshman midfielder Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) fired a rocket at the goal, hitting the back of the net for the second time in the game to give the Knights a two-goal lead. Freshman goalkeeper Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made a big save with 1:40 to play, and another crucial one with 18 ticks left to keep the Knights on top through the final minutes.

Doerr improved to 2-2 on the season after stopping 11 shots in the win. Bard keeper John Henry Glascock made 19 saves, but allowed 12 scores to shoulder the loss.

Freshman attackman Tristan Earle (Milford, Pa.) tallied a hat trick and added an assist for a four-point evening. Sophomore attackman Joseph Rizzotti (East Meadow, N.Y.) also netted a goal for the Knights. Senior midfielder David Hobbs (Baldwin, N.Y.) and freshman attackman Kenneth Gallagher (Northport, N.Y.) each helped out with an assist. Gallagher led with three caused turnovers, and junior midfielder Brendan Nestola (Merrick, N.Y.) went 14-of-23 on face-offs.

Palermo scored four times to lead the Raptors in the loss, adding an assist for five points. Mat Livermore recorded a hat trick, while Blake Burnley scored twice and helped another for three points. George Goceljak matched them with three points with a goal and two assists. Harrison Mauldin scooped up a game-high seven ground balls.

The Knights outshot the Raptors, 51-39, with 31 shots on goal. They also held the advantage in ground balls, 43-35. The Knights were good on 13-of-14 clear attempts, while Bard succeeded on 17-of-25.

The Knights hit the road on Saturday, March 14, to take on Centenary College (N.J.) in a non-conference matchup in Hackettstown, N.J.). The opening face-off is set for 12 p.m.
