Men’s Lacrosse Mounts Big Comeback to Defeat Centenary, 12-11

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – After trailing 10-4 late in the second quarter, the Mount Saint Mary College men's lacrosse team (3-2) strung together six straight goals, as well as the final two of the game to pull off a comeback victory over Centenary College (N.J.) (1-4) by a score of 12-11 Saturday afternoon at JE Reeves Turf Field.

The Cyclones looked to have full control of the game, as they never trailed in the first half. After taking a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, Centenary scored six of the eight total goals in the second quarter and held a 10-5 lead going into halftime. Freshman midfielder Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) scored the final goal of the first half, leading to the Knights' big run.

Head coach Eric Seideman made some big adjustments to the game plan at halftime, and the result was a complete turning of the tables in the second half.

The Knights scored all four of the goals scored in the third quarter to cut the deficit to one. Senior midfielder Jake Robison (Franklin Square, N.Y.) opened the fourth with a goal just 17 seconds in, his third score in the Knights' six-goal run, to tie the game at 10-10. Centenary's Nolan Gottshall gave the Cyclones an 11-10 lead just 90 seconds later, but freshman midfielder Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) sniped one past the keeper at the 11:37 mark to tie the game once again. Senior midfielder David Hobbs (Baldwin, N.Y.) then made his mark on the game, scoring the game-winner with 5:06 to play. Hobbs' game-winning goal was the third of his career.

Robison built off of the four-goal game he had on Wednesday with a seven-point effort to fuel the Knights to victory on Saturday. He hit the back of the net four times once again, and helped out with three assists. De Meo had another big game as well, scoring twice and assisting three more for a five-point afternoon. Kugler scored twice as well, and freshman attackman Tristan Earle (Milford, Pa.) provided a goal and an assist. Kugler also led with five ground balls.

Trevor Krupinski scored three goals and helped out another for a four-point afternoon to lead the Cyclones. Kenton and Nolan Gottshall each scored twice, as well as Anthony Biango. Nolan Gottshall led all players with nine ground balls.

Freshman goalkeeper Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) improved to 3-2 on the year after making four stops in the winning effort. Kevin Switzer made eight saves for Centenary, but allowed 12 goals to take the loss.

The Knights were much more aggressive than their hosts and outshot them, 43-26. It was more evident in the second half, when the Knights outshot the Cyclones, 26-7. The Cyclones led with 25 ground balls to just 21 for the Knights, but both teams were even with 13 face-off wins apiece. The Knights were good on 18-of-20 clear attempts, while Centenary completed 17-of-21.

The Knights return home on Wednesday, March 18, to host Manhattanville College in a non-conference matchup at Kaplan Field. The opening face-off is set for 7 p.m.
